Sony Ericsson Xperia Play and Arc get an update to Android 2.3.3

Might be helpful if it makes a difference

PHONE MAKER Sony Ericsson has announced that it has started rolling out an update to Android 2.3.3 for its Xperia Play and Xperia Arc smartphones.

Via its blog Sony Ericsson has confirmed the first software update to Android 2.3.3 for its two latest handsets. Unlike a lot of other handsets the phones both came preloaded with Android 2.3 Gingerbread and not Android 2.2 Froyo.

The blog post said, "The main feature addition in this update is Facebook inside Xperia that was presented recently when we announced the new mini products in London."

Apparently the Facebook part of the update allows users to share, like and connect to Facebook content in an easier and faster way. It particularly couples with Sony Ericsson's Timescape and the Facebook for Android application.

Other than the social notworking element the update apparently brings some tweaks and tune-ups such as improved battery performance, software stability, WiFi stability, touch responsiveness and, exclusively to the Arc, better HD video recording performance.

The Xperia Play and Xperia Arc have only recently been released and the update, if it makes any actual difference, should help particularly with the disappointing battery life that we found with the Arc.

The rollout starts now and you can get it over-the-air or via your PC. It will vary by location and what customised kit you have as to how quickly you'll get the update. The blog post said, "In general unbranded 'trade-kits' will be early."

Also tagged on at the end of the blog post is a hint that the Xperia X10 is nearing its long awaited upgrade to Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread. The blogger said, "The work is progressing well and I hope to have final confirmation on what features etc it will contain."

We're sure that Sony Ericsson X10 owners will be also delighted to hear that their update that eventually comes out, if it ever comes, will also include the 'Facebook inside Xperia' application. µ
