FINNISH PHONE MAKER Nokia has announced a limited edition premium smartphone covered in rattle rattle.
"It's not a matter about shouting, it's a matter about whispering," said Nokia VP of marketing Alessandro Lamanna.
Well, if that's the opening gambit in Nokia's blog post, its new smartphone is a whisper too loud. Dubbed the Nokia Oro - that's Italian for gold, geddit - the smartphone is covered in 18-carat gold, has a sapphire crystal as its home button and comes in hand wrapped leather from Caledonian, that is, Scottish herds.
Money can't buy taste, apparently, or an above average list of specifications. Bling aside, it's a relatively average smartphone. Nokia said it will have a range of features over different models but the base specifications include the Symbian Anna operating system, HSDPA 3G, WiFi, a 3.5in AMOLED display, an 8MP camera and an HD 720p video capture.
The Nokia Oro is available in black, gold or white gold and is due to launch in limited volume this Autumn for €800 (£695). There's no word on deals with any mobile operators yet, though.
The inexpensive mass market phone vendor Nokia and bling aren't the first things that come to mind as things that go together very well. But there it is and the company said there is a market for this kind of ostentatious phone.
"The main markets for this sort of device are the Middle East and Russia," said a Nokia marketing executive for Russia, Gabriel Speratti. Premium products like Nokia Oro have always been best sellers in Russia," he added.

Yes!. Doing a premium range and pricing it as such makes a whole lot of sense. It is a pity that the OS is Symbian but hey, if that can be upgraded to WP7.1 then it might be a worthwhile purchase.
Still one can argue that target customers will not care what mobile OS it is as long as it works and look nice. True for most, I presume.
