SOFTWARE HOUSE Microsoft has announced a web-based version of the Windows Phone 7 (WP7) Marketplace that will come out with the Mango update to its mobile operating system.
You will be able to buy apps via the web-based WP7 Marketplace, which will be linked to an account already assigned to your existing Windows Live ID. The app will then be automatically downloaded over the air to your device or you can opt to install it later.
A download history will be stored that will make it possible to reinstall apps. Parental controls will also allow management of which apps children can use or block them from downloading apps that cost money.
In an effort to tempt developers a Windows Phone blog said, "As a Windows Phone developer, you [will] get all of the added visibility with no extra work." It added, "We will also have more placement areas in which to provide featured apps with extra visibility and merchandising possibilities."
Microsoft will launch the WP7 web Marketplace with the Mango operating system update that it will release later this year. Currently the WP7 Marketplace offers over 17,000 apps and has 42,000 registered developers.
WP7 looks to be way off the pace compared with Google's Android Market, which already has a web version and over 200,000 apps, whilst Apple has just hit the 500,000 mark of approved apps in its App Store. µ
"17K, 200K, 500K = Same" is typical M$ fanboy propaganda... Nothing new.
17K, 200K, 500K = Same.
How many actual applications are installed on your computer? 50-60? How many of those do you actually use? 12-20?
I have a Droid and a Windows phone 7. There is nothing my droid can do above my Windows Phone 7 and the few differences between the devices will be closed with the Mango update. Actually when Mango arrives there will be things I can do with Windows Phone 7 that are not possible on Android or iPhone.
Right now Netflix is just one App I can do on Windows Phone 7 that I cant do on the Android.
We know 99% of the apps are nothing but fart and flashlight apps anyhow. The truth is when we go by subject of Apps (Movie Times, Traffic Report, Maps, Drink Mixer, etc there is no advantage any other phone has over Windows Phone 7). So having 17K apps means you have something in every category the one with 500K apps has you just dont have 483,000 fart apps like the iPhone.
