Sony starts restoring Playstation Network services

Steps on long road to recovery
Mon May 16 2011, 09:22

ON AND OFF AGAIN gaming firm Sony has begun restoring its Playstation Network online gaming services just short of a month after a hack forced them offline.

The firm started restoring services this weekend and began turning on big switches in the US, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and the Middle East.

On 14 May Patrick Seybold, the communications chap at Sony thanked users for their patience and encouragement, though where he saw any such words is a mystery to us, and added that users could update their firmware and change their passwords.

On the same day Kazuo Hirai, Sony Corporation executive deputy president said that the firm had been working around the clock to get services online and talked up what is apparently one of the most significant changes to Sony's online security - a forced user password change.

Hirai added that Sony, with the help of some third parties, thankfully, had carried out an "an intensive investigation" into the firm's systems and had added encryption, firewalls and an early warning detection system. He added, "Greater protection for information is our top priority."

The forced password change has apparently caused some problems, and Sony took to Twitter to announce that it is postponing that feature for a short while to catch up with requests.

It said, "We're expereiencing (sic) a heavy load," before adding, "If you've requested your password reset, it's taking time to clear all of the ISPs, so please give it a bit of time to reach your email."

Sony expects to get its services back online by the end of May. µ

Ph0n3y PoS3 will LOSE EVERYTIME!

If the hackers stand by their opinion. PSN (the Piece Of Shit NOTwork) will be easily hacked again in under a month.

This happened to Sony for a reason:
Their arrogance and their ignorance!
Plus, their security systems still aren't up to spec at this moment EVERYWHERE, that is why the Japanese government is forcing PSN to remain offline.

Plus the best thing in the PS3 hacking scene has just happened. A method to QA flag every PS3 which remains active after any form of update (even 3.61), leaving it jailbroken and PSN able forever.

PlayStation is doomed, so everybody hack the shit out of it while you can and use it the way YOU want it!

And to the Ph0n3y Turd to the Third fanboys: Eat sh*t because your 600$ falsely advertised system is now worthless!

lol @wtf

Bless you, you have brightened up my da, I can't even begin to tell you how many different ways you little rant fails, it's just so multilayered. I could start with how you know a huge number of people are patient, all i've seen is vitriol aimed at Sony on just about every site that even mentions this story. it's so obviously anonymous? really? oh yes a text file with anonymous written all over it.....and there was i thinking they would do an indepth investigation as to who downed the largest electronics company's flagship network for a month. No'one gives a $h1t whether or not you or anyone else thinks ps is better than x box is better than pc is better than zx81.....honestly no one cares (except maybe you) you keep up the nonesense though, reasing posts like yours puts a big ass smile on my face :)

really?

First off, before you comment on typos within an article, maybe make sure you spell dying correctly.
Secondly, I don't think it comes as a shock to many people that a large number of PS3 users did not take kindly to this whole ordeal. There was talk of expecting compensation from Sony, talk of replacing their systems with an Xbox - if anything, I would suggest that it's gracious of any Playstation spokesman to suggest users were patient.

WTF?

'thanked all PSN users for their support and patience but where the hell did he hear all that from?'

Actually my ignorant friend, I and a huge number of others have shown our loyalty and patience to Sony. This could of happened to ANY large company. It was so obviously Anonymous and our details were never going to be used in a criminal manner. They wanted, threatened and even PROMISED to hurt Sony, what better way could they of done that than tarnishing their reputation with their users? Anonymous are SCUM! Sony PlayStation is THE best home for hardcore gamers like myself and they will bounce back from this EASILY. They already have. I didnt mind TOO much being offline for a few weeks. Gave me a chance to get through alot of SP games i have had for ages and not even opened till then. SONY PS3 beats M$ 360 EVERYTIME!
