Android Gingerbread is rolling out to the Samsung Galaxy Tab

Honeycomb would taste sweeter though
Thu May 12 2011, 13:27

KOREAN HARDWARE GIANT Samsung seems committed to supporting owners of its original Galaxy Tab, at least for now.

An update will bring the seven-inch tablet up to the most recent Android 2.3 for phones, called Gingerbread. Owners expecting Honeycomb, the current tablet-oriented version of Android are advised not to hold their breath.

Gingerbread improves the user interface quite a bit, and it also makes copy and paste a more pleasant experience too. The update adds near-field communications support as well, but that's useless on the Galaxy Tab, since it doesn't have the hardware to make use of that technology.

The bad news is that in order to get the update you must use Samsung's horrid PC software, Kies.

Experts might like to just do the update themselves, by downloading it from a web site like samfirmware.com and using some less contemptible software to flash the device. It's worth pointing out that this method isn't without its risks and anyone choosing to do it this way is on their own.

While it's nice to see Samsung update its devices, especially with new Galaxy Tabs imminent, we can't help but wish this was a jump up to Honeycomb.

Whether the original Galaxy Tab can't support Honeycomb or Samsung just doesn't want to invest the time getting it ready isn't clear. But if you were a massive Korean multinational, would you undermine the sales of your new tablets by updating the old ones? No, we didn't think so. µ

frilly knickers

Honeycomb is just like putting on a pair of frilly knickers (so my mrs tells me. . . .Honest) So it looks totally different and a nightmare to navigate. Great! Wow! 7" screen is to small for honeycombs awkward u.i and icons imo. Theres a big gap between 2.3 & 3.1 - room for improvement :-)

Honeycomb can be done

My coworker flashed Honeycomb onto his Galaxcy a week after it was released. also has it set up to use as a phone via Goog Voice. Thats the beauty of the android platform.

No Samsung

"But if you were a massive Korean multinational, would you undermine the sales of your new tablets by updating the old ones? No, we didn't think so. "

Of course, this is why I wouldn't buy a Samsung - they have gotten a reputation of doing this.

Honeycomb is tablet only

One must keep in mind that honeycomb is tablet only software and hence not a perfect fit for galaxy tab. Maybe yes for galaxy tab wifi only models.

nice

This is a good news. Froyo has some issues with tablets. By the way, kies is actually not bad.
