3G call and tweet are sent from Mt Everest

"I’m on the mountain"
Fri May 06 2011, 16:20

KENTON COOL has become the first mountaineer to make a video call and send a tweet from the top of Mount Everest.

Cool used the Samsung Galaxy S II for his communications, which is probably why Samsung bought this to our attention. We certainly were not sitting on Mount Everest reading a book and waiting to Shhhhh somebody.

Samsung tells us that this is the first ever 3G connection from Mount Everest, which we doubt, and the worlds highest tweet, which probably is true. Whatever, having scaled the mountain Cool took out his new phone, courtesy of Samsung, tweeted, posted a photo to Twitpic and updated his Facebook status.

"I've climbed Everest before, but have never been able to share the exhilaration and excitement I experience when I reach the top with those back home," he said.

"I unboxed the new Samsung Galaxy S II at base camp and was excited to be able to not only make a 3G connected call home, but also to use all the other great features like updating my Facebook status, tweeting on my journey up and posting a picture to share my moment with friends."

The INQUIRER is just popping outside, it might be some time. µ

Infrastructure?

So are there mobile phone masts all the way up? Perhaps they're disguised as natural features so the local population don't complain so much. There's one about 100 yards from my house disguised as a metal pole. Pity my 3G signal dies as soon as I sit on the sofa. Lucky really that there won't be any problem with water or snow absorbing signals there or anything like that.

If only

If only I could do this from central London, or inside my office. They must have better coverage in Nepal.
