BEAN COUNTERS at IDC have reported that the worldwide mobile PC chip market grew by 7.4 per cent year on year in the first quarter of 2011 and that Intel had over 86 per cent marketshare.

According to the data harvested by IDC, both Intel and AMD were raking it in with their latest mobile PC processors, with both companies shipping more chips than expected. However IDC pointed out that the shipments data was tracked with an extra week counted in the quarter, which helped to artificially boost sales figures a bit.

In terms of overall PC processor vendor marketshare, Chipzilla grabbed 80.8 per cent while AMD took 18.9 per cent with VIA Technologies barely moving the needle with 0.2 per cent.

In the mobile PC processor market, Intel gained 0.2 per cent to get 86.3 per cent marketshare, and AMD accounted for only 13.4 per cent with a slight loss of 0.1 per cent.

AMD fared better with a slight gain in the server market with a 0.3 per cent gain, but a much smaller marketshare of 6.1 per cent. Chimpzilla did better in the desktop market where it gained 0.1 per cent and had a bigger slice of the market at 27.4 per cent.

Overall, Intel maintained its PC processor market dominance and will continue to add to the $41.9 billion in sales that it booked last year.

IDC also threw in its quarterly predictions, forecasting that the PC processor market will see shipment growth of 10.3 per cent and revenue growth of 17.6 per cent by the end of 2011, adding up to $43 billion. µ

Somehow I Don’t Think That Includes Tablets...

So, are tablets considered “PCs”, or not?

Strike!!!

@ Kaze:

"...
People buy the product they think is best for their dollar, in this case it's Intel."

No, you are wrong. People buy what the clerk at the store sells them, even if it's a crappy Atom netbook. Can we say "Intel Marketing Dollars"... :)

I wouldn't touch an Intel product

With the many convictions that Intel has for anti-trust violations and tax evasion, I will never buy any of their products again. AMD products are more than competitive and offer a better value than Intel so I'm not missing a thing with AMD. If it wasn't for AMD we all still be using P90s that cost $1000 a pop, due to Intel's illegally gotten monopoly.

naive ?

@AAAbbb
What does naive have to do with anything ? People buy the product they think is best for their dollar, in this case it's Intel. As much as I would like to see AMD get on par with Intel, the fact is that they are inferior at every price point. Sandy Bridge is fantastic value for money.

MY DESKTOP IS AMD BUT MY LAPTOP IS INTEL

AND I RECENTLY REPLACED MY LAPTOP AND I AM PROBABLY NOT GOING TO REPLACE MY DESKTOP.

Hmmm...

People have to stop being naive and consider that there are other alternatives than intel when it comes to processors.
