Nokia releases Qt software development kit 1.1

Get developing for Symbian before it's gone
Wed May 04 2011, 15:05

FINNISH PHONE MAKER Nokia has announced that the full version of its Qt software development kit (SDK) 1.1 is available to download.

Following the beta version that Nokia released in March, the full Qt SDK 1.1 offers the ability to create apps for Symbian as well as for desktop applications such as Windows 7, Mac OS X and Linux.

According to Nokia's blog the SDK also "allows you to create apps for Maemo and soon MeeGo devices".

With Qt 1.1 comes Qt Quick, a user interface to help developers and designers. The blog describes it as "an app-creation component combines visual tools like Qt Creator 2.1 with the new QML language".

QML is similar to Javascript and apparently makes development of user interfaces for touchscreens much easier. To give this some kind of context, Nokia's blog said, "QML is estimated to allow 70 per cent fewer lines of code than C++ for a typical app, halving development times."

Nokia said that Qt 1.1 includes map and navigation features, imaging features and notification application programming interfaces plug-ins. If you've never developed an app using Qt there is a full tutorial in the SDK to get you going.

To back up the release of the SDK, Nokia proclaimed that developers can target "100 million Nokia devices in addition to the 150 million future Symbian smartphones Nokia intends to sell". µ

Qt rocks

A few years ago I was looking for a good development tool for Linux and I gave Qt a shot. I found it to be just awesome (and that was a pretty old version).

I can't see why IT developers overrate so much that stupid freaking messy crap called Java like it was a gift from the heavens and pretty much ignore everything else.

Qt is good, and I recommend every IT developer to give it an open-minded try.
