RUPERT MURDOCH'S UK news rags are doing well on the Ipad, according to figures released by News International.

A spokesperson for News International, Daisy Dunlop told The INQUIRER that the Ipad edition of The Times has an average daily download figure of 25,000, while the figure for The Sunday Times is 22,000 downloads per day.

She also said that the average age for Ipad readers of the newspapers was 47 and that the average household income was £109,000.

The Times has a digital subscriber base of 79,000 people, which includes the Ipad edition. This means that the Ipad version accounts for over a quarter of all digital subscribers, suggesting a lucrative business for the newspaper, which began charging for digital editions in July of last year. There is also a Kindle version available.

The Times has a total circulation of 445,962 and The Sunday Times has a circulation of 1,045,495. They have reader bases of 1.5 million and 2.9 million respectively, making them some of the most popular publications in the UK.

In March both publications saw a 60 per cent growth in readership of their digital editions, which fuelled a three per cent growth in paid readers for The Times. News International expects that its flourishing digital business will also put The Sunday Times into year-on-year growth in July.

"There is a great appetite to reach that attractive early adopter audience and advertisers are now including the Ipad as an important part of the marketing mix, to complement print or online display," said Alex Hole, digital commercial director for News International. "In future we see a time for more complex targeting around demographic, the user journey or different times of day to meet advertisers' needs more comprehensively."

Dunlop said News International would not be releasing any other figures relating to the Ipad edition of its newspapers at this time.

A subscription to the digital editions of The Times and The Sunday Times costs £2 per week or £1 for 24 hours of access. µ
