Opera beta offers dual browser use

Swordfish hauled on board by web browser firm
Wed May 04 2011, 10:05

BROWSER SOFTWARE OUTFIT Opera is offering users a developer beta of its next web browser and the chance to run it in tandem with its current production version.

A fresh release from the firm has three interesting features, including Opera Next, password synchronisation, and speed dial extensions.

Opera Next, the most interesting of the three additions to Opera 11.5, or Swordfish, is aimed at developers, and will let users run incoming releases against stable installations of its browser. According to a blog post Opera Next will always be kept up-to-date through automatic updates and will give developers access to the latest stable build.

Opera has gone to some lengths to distinguish Opera Next from other beta releases and said that it has a distinct look, including a new logo and icon. Other features that should prevent cross-contamination include no shared bookmarking, which means that web pages bookmarked in the dev channel version will not be bookmarked in the stable release.

"This ensures that your valuable data and settings remain untouched when you try out our latest changes," said the company in its release notes.

Password synchronisation is handled by Opera Link, which the firm said has additional options in the Swordfish release, while the Speed Dial extensions enable things like live previews of web pages. µ

This isn't 11.10

For those who claim password sync is not present, try actually downloading 11.50; this will be the first version to include such a feature.

Oh Dear

This is for the Opera geeks who can't handle the truth

I would post something myself on Opera but I got banned for pointing out problems before. You get hammered for posting anyting negative about the browser there

Works ~ password sync and google docs...

I had to do little or nothing to get both these features to work.

When I checked status of 'links' on status bar -- I see the 'passwords' checkbox

Tried existing google doc spreadsheet no problem.

I'm still an Opera fan (pun intended --their Unite services come in handy). I'm trying to get OperaWatir to work.
Having some difficulty with that -- but, that might be because I already have several Opera profiles going.

Reaction to reaction

Password sync and Google docs are working fine, but for the last one, you'll need the latest browser.js version, because Google change something and forgot to tell Opera about it. So Opera has made a fix for it.

Before give an reaction to an article, please be sure that you are correct, whcih yo aren't

Opera just don't care or listen

Opera just don't listen to people anymore. You don't have to be a rocket sciencetist to know peope want Google Docs working and password synchronisation working first.

They'd rather just keep adding things rather then fix/add what the other browsers can already do.

There is a word for people like them but I wont get away with posting it here
