Android Ice Cream Sandwich OS draws closer

Google drops a hint about next update
Tue May 03 2011, 15:16

INTERNET AND SOFTWARE GIANT Google is likely to announce the name of its next Android release shortly, after an engineer blabbed about its title in an online discussion.

Traditionally Google has named its Android releases after desserts and this looks to be no exception, as it is looking increasingly likely that Android version 2.4 will have the mouth watering moniker Ice Cream Sandwich.

The Ice Cream Sandwich name has been rumoured for some time, but at the end of last week in a post on an Android developer website Google worker Romain Guy wrote, "A bug fix will be provided in Ice Cream Sandwich."

No news about an actual release date has slipped out of Google, but the name is a nice fit for the OS, especially when you consider the names of the other, sweet-toothed updates.

To date the company has released six sweet-toothed versions of Android including Eclair, Froyo (short for Frozen yoghurt), Gingerbread and Honeycomb. µ
