SONY CONSOLE HACKER Geohot has denied having anything to do with the massive Playstation Network (PSN) security breach.
George Hotz, who uses the handle 'Geohot' and recently settled with Sony after it had sued him for alleged Playstation 3 (PS3) copyright violations, said he wasn't responsible for hacking Sony's PSN and Qriocity services.
In fact, Hotz went so far as to say the breach, which reportedly stole the personal information of PSN users, gave hackers a bad name. He said that it played into the hands of Sony management who want to declare war on hackers and portray them as bad.
"And to anyone who thinks I was involved in any way with this, I'm not crazy, and would prefer to not have the FBI knocking on my door," Geohot wrote on his blog.
"Running homebrew and exploring security on your devices is cool, hacking into someone elses server and stealing databases of user info is not cool.
"You make the hacking community look bad, even if it is aimed at douches like Sony," he added.
Hotz built up a following after Sony filed a lawsuit against him for hacking the PS3 console. Sony even tried to suggest he had gone on the run to South America as the company wanted make him an example to deter other hackers.
The result was that Geohot gained active support from the online hacktivist group Anonymous and received significant donations to a fund for his legal defence, the remainder of which he gave to the Electronic Frontier Foundation. µ

"In home computing, a hacker is a person who heavily modifies the software or hardware of their own computer system. It includes building, rebuilding, modifying, and creating software (software cracking, demo scene) or electronic hardware (hardware hacking, modding), either to make it better, faster, to give it added features or to make it do something it was never intended to do." -Wikipedia

Need I go on?
Is there any chance that The Inquirer reports stories related to computers and not cutting trees down? If you don't know the difference between criminal computer hacking and cutting a tree down with a hatchet, should you really be posting comments?
I find the term "hacking" applied pretty loosely by some people.
When trying to use a word and applying it to any person or activity, please try to apply it correctly.
Hacking is not illegal or even evil, but a mandatory action to bring down a tree with an axe as an example...
Computer hacking is not a crime since the definition is not "doing illegal things to computer systems".
As for this guy, if he's innocent then the charges will hopefully be dropped. If not, then I guess he deserves some time-out.
But isn't that some kind of manipulation to kill sony and insure apple's and microsoft's dominance on online trades (US vs. Japan ?).
Duh, hacking is a crime. No wonder hackers are getting a "bad name". Only someone on crack or Charlie Sheen could say that a hacker is getting a "bad name" by hacking. Send them all to prison.
to get involved in something like this, especially after only just settling that court case...
Well, gee, if he hadn't jailbroken his PS3 and share all of his exploits on the net, then he'd be a voice worth listening to. In the meantime, each time he says the world 'homebrew' with PS3, it makes him sound more like some redneck idiot.
how long will this last im about to switch to xbox360
