GAMES CONSOLE MAKER Nintendo has revealed that sales of its 3DS handheld gaming device are lower than expected.
Nintendo said that sales of its portable console that can display 3D images were high for the initial week, but that after the second week they began to drop below its forecast.
In Europe sales of the 3DS started off strongly at the 300,000 unit mark, but this dropped sharply to 100,000 by week two and down to 50,000 by week three, the level of sales seen by the 2011 edition of the original DS device.
The company said that the earthquake in Japan has so far not directly impacted production or sales of the 3DS in its Japanese, US and European markets.
Nintendo said it recognises that it needs to increase its promotion campaign for the 3DS, but it could also be forced to acknowledge that the market for 3D gaming might not really be there. The 3D craze reignited after Avatar hit the movie screens in 2009, but sales of 3D TVs have been worse than expected. It might be that the fad is fading and the novelty is wearing off.
Nintendo also revealed that sales of its Wii motion control console are beginning to fall. The company hopes to recover strength in this area by releasing the Wii 2 some time next year. It is rumoured that it will have high definition graphics and that the controllers for the console will feature built-in screens. µ

No promotion.
Mediocre launch titles (Street Fighter IV being the exception).
No e-store.
Not enough free 3d video clips (1 free clip)
No web browser.
No free downloadable demos.
The problem isn't the lack of promotion. I'd say it's big problem is the 3D gives a decent percentage if not most people headaches after using it for at most a half hour at a time. In otherwords it's defining feature for which it is name is relatively useless.
Add that to the fact Sony is expected to launch the vastly superior NGP later this year for around the same price and gamers are just gonna wait.
@evil genius
I gotta admit the region lock is probably turning people off as well. Afterall no handheld in the history of the gaming industry has been region locked. That said judging from what I've read it's region lock is like the one in the PS3 ie it's up to the software developer if they want to lock it so some things might work and some things might not.
It's time for the 3D fad to end. Nintendo and James Cameron need to slap themselves in the face and wake up! Nobody wants this stupid technology in their homes, and honestly most people would be fine with it leaving theaters too.
Nintendo and James Cameron are the main proponents of this idiotic tech. Someone needs to smarten both of them up, because their incessant focus on 3D is just disturbing, especially with Cameron. That dude is OBSESSED with 3D, big time.
3d now go to oblivion...
well, 3d will go to the sleep another 2 decades until some wake up again.
2 decades is the generation gap needed to forget how bad the 3d is.
It would have helped if they had halfway decent launch titles - the only ones worth mentioning were Street Fighter IV and Pilotwings.
The first of the big 3DS games don't even come out 'till June (Ocarina of Time), and then it's a jump utill July with StarFox.
Personally, I'm waiting until the eventual OoT bundle to get mine.
well i think the fact that my daughter is 6 and your box basicly says she may go blind (have vision problems) if played for prolonged amounts of time is y i didnt get one. i mean who plays for 10 mins at a time? and the second second thing is for all i know i might get a radio-active one since its coming from japan. no but really i played it at gamestop and wasnt impressed a bit
This is enough to stop me from buying
3DZZZZZZZZZZ
I'm surprised it's sold at all with such shitty launch titles their just ports and games not worth the money.
The system's launch titles were less than stellar. It will be good to see how the device fares once better games come out.
