LG announces two 3D monitors

Flicker free visuals promised

KOREAN DISPLAY MAKER LG has announced two 3D monitors with updated three dimensional technology to reduce flickering.

We love it when vendors admit that most punters aren't yet biting 3D technology despite the ubiquity of products on offer. LG marketing has admitted consumers aren't chomping at the 3D bit due to concerns over price and performance. But LG reckons the Film Patterned Retarder (FPR) 3D technology in its upcoming D41P and D42P monitors will be enough to attract some customers.

LG claims the D41P and D42P monitors have entirely eliminated the nausea and headache-inducing flicker created on most 3D display thanks to its FPR technology. FPR apparently delivers clearer and brighter 3D images with lower cross-talk, which should reduce eye-strain.

Even if LG has addressed price and performance issues with FPR technology, its D41P and D42P 3D monitors still rely on 3D glasses. With glassless 3D already a reality, most people aren't buying 3D displays because the technology is still in flux and no one wants to spend thousands on kit that will soon be obsolete.

That said, LG has given the monitors HDMI 1.4 support so you can hook them up to your consoles and bypass PCs or much more expensive 3D TV's. Given the dearth of 3D content except for gaming, LG is also bundling 2D to 3D conversion software that converts on the fly. We haven't seen any decent conversion software yet, however, so we're not holding our breath.

LG hasn't put prices on the monitors or provided full specifications but they will be out in the UK in June. µ

A big but...

LG's patterned retarder comes at the expense of halving the vertical resolution.

each horizontal line is patterned with an alternately opposing phase retarder to give alternating left hand and right hand circularly polarised light. Unless they start making panels with 1920x2160 resolution, then this approach will always have a huge setback.

sure, using passive polarised glasses instead of active shutter glasses is a good approach but not at the expense of resolution.

FAIL.

3D content is the winner

The only reason 3D is gaining market penetration now is that there is a relatively large amount of content, compared to the pushes 10-20 years ago.

While the tech to deliver 3D is mostly refined versions of what has worked previously, the fact that there is now 3D content and methods of distribution means we are seeing innovation and choice in delivery; 3D is now, but its also the future.

And when a superior and ubiquitous 3D content delivery system is invented there will be content to drive the system...

Polarized

FYI what FPR is is simply polarized images, the same as used with 3D movies in theaters and which can do with cheap passive 3D glasses.

Don't buy into 'curing all issues' though since it will only help some people in some circumstances and plenty of people will still have the dissimilar eyes and focus issues that makes them nauseous when viewing 3D, people get that in 3D movie theaters too after all. (and they will get it with glasses-free 3D too).
But it does seem to solve some issues though and that's nice.

Personally I don't buy into all the hype they try to push with 3D but I don't buy all the hysterical Luddites either, I've seen some 3D that worked and it was a nice experience, I don't think it's worth paying double or triple the cost of a TV/monitor for though nor do I believe it should be forced upon everything, it's nice to have as an option on a TV for a small surcharge.

Better 2D

These 3d monitors are better at 2d. Those crappy 60hz monitors should never have hit the market, much less still being produced. 60hz sucked on tube montiors and stuck around for flat screens. 3d monitors are 120hz and better. If you have good eyes and look at both, you will never want to see 60hz again.
Death to 60hz displays.
