Putin is not planning an Internet Iron Curtain

Russia will not lock down Internet communications
Wed Apr 20 2011, 15:59

RUSSIAN PRIME MINISTER Vladimir Putin has promised not to increase government controls over Internet communications, despite some high profile social networking attacks and an apparent drive to protect its high ranking citizens.

During a question and answer session in the Russian Parliament, Putin said that there was nothing much that he could do to control the Internet and therefore wouldn't be doing anything.

"My personal opinion is that I don't think it is possible to limit anything," he said, according to a Reuters report. "We don't plan on slapping down anything."

However, other parts of the Russian government, such as the security services might carry out their own Internet blocking activities, according to Putin, who added, "it is their concern".

Earlier this month AFP suggested that it was indeed the concern of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) when it reported that the agency had requested a ban on the use of Gmail, Hotmail and Skype.

Accordng to the AFP, those web applications were considered unwelcome in Russia because they "use foreign-made encryption technology".

Alexander Andreyechkin, the FSB's information and special communication centre director added, "Uncontrolled usage of these services may lead to massive threat to Russia's security." µ

do not read this brave citizens

Even though the ban of those services won't happen and would not be considered in russia anyway I must say the willingness to bring that story in such a broken way and the willingness to then use that to bash russia is amazing, especially since the US has the patriot act and their NSA not only suggested spying on EVERY citizen, but actually DID and does.
(I won't even mention how things are in the UK..)
Russia is a hell of a lot more free than the US in practice it seems and they'd have a hard time to reach the level of the US clampdown, even if they or its authorities wanted to.

Excuse the short interlude in the propaganda, we now return you to your regular programing.

Security is no excuse for privacy breaches

how fragile the world has become that you could easily scare them with words like security & terrorism to take away their freedon?
