Google suspends Samsung Galaxy S update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread

Teases with one day of availability
Wed Apr 20 2011, 11:23

ONE DAY after its release, the update for Samsung Galaxy S owners to Android 2.3 Gingerbread has been pulled by Google.

Vodafone announced the update release yesterday via its forums, but pulled it by this morning.  It explained, "there are no known performance issues with the Vodafone variant of the device, we are working with Samsung to reinstate the roll out as soon as possible".

The news came only a day after Vodafone announced that its customers would be able to download the update to the operating system via Samsung's KIES application and a USB cable.

The update to Gingerbread will bring users numerous fixes and improvements including interface changes, a new keyboard, better power efficiency, multiple camera management and the ability to switch the device to 2G mode.

We're not sure if anyone managed to get the update over the short time it was available, but you can check whether you have the update by dialling *#1234# which will show i9000BUJV4 as the software version if the handset has been updated.

If you're after the newer keyboard then this can be downloaded via the Android Market, named 'Keyboard from Android 2.3'. µ

Telecom New Zealand hasn't even let us have 2.2 yet. Telecom - the Bleeding Edge of Technology!

fragmentation my ass

Oh my, more Apple brainwashing. Ask about their iPhone ios, what about their devices that can't ever reach 4 heaven? Then just imagine the end of life for other devices once the Iphone 5 comes out. Then with the 3gs still selling for 50 (kudos to Apple, that is a steal) it won't be long before Apple eats its own words. like with flash support being irrelevant.

Samsung and Android software.....

I have a Samsung Galaxy S. The software that came on it was horrible. It lagged like a one-legged drunk climbing a sand dune in a hurricane. SLOW. I upgraded it to Android v2.2.1 by flashing a more current firmware from another region ("JPY"). This one has been fine and works really well. But the generally poor performance of Samsung Android firmware has left me thinking I love the phone - it's awesome - but I won't buy another Samsung until they get their quality under control. I've had an Acer Liquid, Google Nexus One and HTC Magic and all of them had MUCH better firmware than Samsung provided out of the box....though the "JPY" ROM I'm on now is close to perfect. Luck shouldn't be the key factor.

Damn carriers

Here is an idea. Don't modify the damn thing to begin with and roll out the Samsung update OTA. My phone is my phone. A carrier should not have a say in what I have on it.
