Virgin Media is testing 1.5Gb broadband in London

Claims fastest speeds in the world
Wed Apr 20 2011, 11:20

BROADBAND PROVIDER Virgin Media is testing cable broadband speeds of up to 1.5Gbps in London, which it claims are the fastest speeds in the world.

The tests are beginning near Old Street in east London. Virgin Media has partnered with four companies including Bespokebanter.com for the tests, the results of which will prove important to Internet-based businesses and consumers interested in streaming media and high-end gaming.

The network will be capable of delivering speeds of up to 1.5Gbps, which is 240 times faster than the UK average. Upload speeds are also expected to jump to up to 150Mbps.

Virgin Media cited previous tests that have confirmed that cable broadband can deliver download speeds of 1Gbps, but this latest push will trump that and potentially make the UK one of the world leaders for high speed broadband, in stark contrast to existing Internet offerings in Blighty.

Virgin said that it is able to deliver this kind of speed due to its £13 billion investment in connecting homes to its fibre optic network via high-grade coaxial cables. It slated BT for its reliance on old-fashioned copper and aluminium wiring for part of its network.

Virgin also claimed that the DOCSIS3 technology used as part of its network is 'future-proofed' and has nearly infinite capacity, while also supporting Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6).

Of course, broadband speeds of 1.5Gbps are unlikely to come cheap. Expect to pay a pretty penny every month for these mind-boggling speeds. µ

Why bother?

Are they still using the incredibly buggy "Superhubs" that can't hold a connection for full day or a wireless signal for a few minutes? The one where they tell you to disable the firewall to stop it falling over.

No doubt it will be full tested by their in-house team, only to fail spectacularly when forced on the long suffering VM customers.

And what's the back-end like?

Most of the time in London they struggle to provide 1.5Mbps, never mind 1.5Gbps. It's okay for web surfing, but it can be annoying watching stuttering videos if you try and get anything more than standard definition. So maybe they should also be spending some time on ensuring that they can provide the stated service to their existing customers before offering a 1.5Gbps service to businesses! Then again, there's more money in the latter...

speedy

I wonder what the download cap will be on this?

Would be hilarious if after downloading 1GB they cut you down to 10Mbit :)

And in London, really? Where the "up to 20Mbit" means "no more than 6 if you are lucky"
