Sixth arrest in Anonymous investigation

Police pick up a suspected hactivist
Fri Apr 15 2011, 09:40

UK POLICE have made a sixth arrest in their ongoing investigation of Anonymous as they attempt to throw a net over the online hactivists.

The Telegraph reports that an Anonymous suspect was questioned in Cleveland, UK, and bailed shortly after. He is set to re-appear, it added, in May, while the other five Anonymous suspects previously arrested are due back at police stations in June.

Anonymous is a large, loosely associated group according to its claims, so the arrests, though significant if there is evidence at hand, might be a drop in the ocean.

The group, which first rose to notoriety when it took on Scientologists, has succesfully targeted a number of firms, and its online presence has increased in the last few months.

As protectors of individual rights and freedom Anonymous has acted powerfully on behalf of the open Internet in attacks on HBGary Federal, for sensible copyright thinkers as it attacked the music Mafiaa and the other 'families' in the music racket, and for whistleblowers in defense of Wikileaks.

As its name suggests, the group prides itself on its members' anonymity, and in a recently released and apparently official, handbook document advises its members to blend in as much as possible.

"Blend in with the crowd, disperse into the stream. Keep a low profile. Don't try to be special. Remember, when in Rome, do as Romans do. Don't try to be a smart ass. Feds are many, Anonymous is Legion (PDF), but you are only one", it wrote.

"Heroes only exist in comic books keep that in mind! There are no old heroes; there are only young heroes and dead heroes." µ

Just saying

Advising members of anonymous to use mIRC is not a good idea, it's strict on checking if you paid for it the last few years so each time you start it up it calls home, and so your IP is broadcast to a central spot and the spooks can correlate the time someone logs onto IRC with the time mirc called home.
And I doubt mirc uses your SSL settings when it calls home.

Troy,

Really awesome to know there are plenty of people like you still exist. That as long as the gov or media says it, it's true.

According to you, I guess I'm an evil hacker who should be given the death sentence. After all, I was also arrested in relation to Anonymous. But as I actually committed no crime, no charges were brought against me. Doesn't matter though, does it? Doesn't matter that I lost tens of thousands of dollars in legal defense, bail, and destruction of my property, and that I lost reputation for a crime I didn't commit? I'm still guilty of SOMETHING, right?

You sound like one of my coworkers. You want the heads of those the press say are "bad guys," no matter what. Even if it's merely an accusation or questioning. Even worse, most of you won't change your tune even if the media is proven to be wrong, or if someone is not found guilty. It doesn't matter, you heard it once, the person is bad, so it must be true and they are guilty...right?

totally true, except for comic book comment

"Heroes only exist in comic books keep that in mind! There are no old heroes; there are only young heroes and dead heroes."

100% true, the biggest hero ever, Jesus, only had a run of about 3.5 years before He was killed. Other heroes shouldn't expect to do better.

Revolt

This is the internet version of the rebelions going on overthrowing their governments. Unfortunetly the governments and companies being faught write the laws to remove human rights and will most certanly call the "human rights hackers" Terrorist to persacute them, when all they are doing is working for human rights. Welcome to the future, put your chains on and get to work.

It's all good

They can run but they can't hide. The only good hacker is dead. The more of these idiots they prosecute the better.
