Sony settles with PS3 jailbreak hacker Geohot

Battered by Anonymous, Sony ends litigation with George Hotz
Mon Apr 11 2011, 18:00

IN A JOINT STATEMENT, Sony and hacker George Hotz have announced an end to their legal dustup, and presumably also an end to the Anonymous attacks against Sony.

The two parties took to the web, fittingly since in recent weeks Sony has struggled with its online presence, to announce that it has reached an accord.

"Sony is glad to put this litigation behind us," said Riley Russell, general counsel for Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA). "Our motivation for bringing this litigation was to protect our intellectual property and our consumers. We believe this settlement and the permanent injunction achieve this goal."

"It was never my intention to cause any users trouble or to make piracy easier," said Geohot, or George Hotz to his mum. "I'm happy to have the litigation behind me."

Having the litigation behind him means removing any links to his workaround to Sony security systems from forum posts. Hotz has agreed to this, but has denied any wrongdoing.

One thing that Sony will be wanting to put behind it is the barrage of attention that it got, and continues to get from hacktivist group Anonymous.

This month has seen the powerful loosely linked group take down the firm's websites and game network, while this week it plans to advance on its physical stores and disrupt business there.

Although Hotz was not involved in the web attacks, according to the joint statement Sony might still ask him if he won't mind asking his new friends to lay off. µ

your confused

The crime is the garbage software companies put out and take no responsibliity for. Then when someone finds ways to run other programs on those systems they eare criminals? No the systems should not allow that or they should let you do with a console when you buy it. I own it right?

Hackers beware

I read these articles about hackers and people talk about them as though they are not criminals!
Let me assure everyone; hackers are very dangerous criminals and need to be put away for long periods!
Hackers think they are stars and above the law! Guess what? Hackers are dirty people looking for false glory and fame!
Get a life!

Possessive instinct fail.

When someone like Geohot hacks your stuff it is the ultimate accolade and if they had gone with it, instead of stamping all over it like a three year old in a tantrum, it would have helped Sony sell stuff, maybe even improve the product.

Microsoft knew better re kinect so dont say it isn't so.

Instead Sony went with a knee jerk possessive response and came out of it looking like a bully who got a well deserved spanking.

PR foolishness from a knee jerk reaction. People have got to learn to share Sony, listen to your Mom.
