Windows 7 passes Windows XP as the top OS in US

People are finally upgrading after Vista sank
Mon Apr 11 2011, 11:23

WINDOWS XP is no longer the most used operating system in the US after Windows 7 overtook it in April.

Microsoft's aging Windows XP operating system kept its crown for many years, despite two subsequent Windows releases in the form of Windows Vista and Windows 7. It was Windows Vista's monumental failure that kept Windows XP on most personal computers, but people are finally warming enough to Windows 7 to part with trusted Windows XP.

The figure for Windows 7 this month is 31.71 per cent, according to Statcounter and Pingdom research. Windows XP is slightly behind at 31.56 per cent, making the Windows 7 lead a very slight one, but one that is likely to grow over time.

Windows Vista came in a third place with 19.07 per cent, surprisingly high for how poor it is and how obviously superior Windows 7 is in comparison.

Mac OS X is in fourth place with 14.87 per cent. Linux grabs the fifth spot with a paltry 0.7 per cent according to Statcounter, while other operating systems take a collective 2.09 per cent share.

Windows 7 has seen its market share rise fairly rapidly since its release, while both Windows XP and Windows Vista have seen their shares fall at a similar rate. Before Windows 7 was released Windows XP had close to 50 per cent market share, while Windows Vista had a share in the mid 30s. Windows 7 passed Windows Vista in about October of last year, but passing Windows XP is a much more meaningful milestone.

Windows 7 has also overtaken Windows XP in a number of other countries, including the UK, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Norway and Sweden. µ

Windows 7 is a gimmick

Windows 7 is just like Vista rehashed. Full of gimmicks and fancy tricks. Aero Snap? There's a far better version in XP called Tile Horizontally or Tile Vertically that isn't limited to arranging just two windows but any number you select. There are many good useful features of XP removed and broken in Windows 7. The file manager, Windows Explorer was utterly destroyed in Vista and becomes worse in Windows 7. Poor usability. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_features_removed_in_Windows_7 and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_features_removed_in_Windows_Vista . Unnecessary GUI changes. Vista was innonative but horrible usability wise and removed things. Windows 7 is Vista with few new features and again many features removed and fancy gimmicks and shiny graphics added.

That dog don't hunt

On my job I service computers and a good 90% of the computers I see are XP with a good 5% at Vista and the rest at Win7, which, BTW, has a remarkable number of problems most of which are just like those in Vista and XP. In fact, there are so many problems in Win7 just like in XP that I really wonder if they didn't just resurface XP with a newer look. Of course that's not true, but the defect similarities are remarkable.

Yes, Vista is/was a steaming pile and there's little good to be said about it, but I have to disagree with one of the prior posters where they claim that things are easier to find in Win7 over Vista. The interface elements that changed mostly the status bar with some reorganization on the interface. There are a lot of things difficult to find in Win7 that one could easily find in XP (again, who cares about Vista?).

I just can't agree with Microsoft's numbers. Win7 certainly is NOT representative of 50% of the Windows market.

The drawback to such numbers is that if they are at 50% they only have 50% to go in the next year or so and then their market will be saturated again. Who'll want to buy another OS after the debacle of Vista and the sudden jump to Win7. Unless Win8 has a serious number of amazing features people will not take the bait.

And, as far as XP goes, as dated as it might seem, the only thing making XP dated is Microsoft's abandonment of it in terms of updates. XP could easily receive updates to give it another few years of solid service. The point being that most software is still usable with XP and any that isn't was intentionally designed that way to phase it out.

Much Love for Windows 7

Windows 7 is a wonderful operating system. Especially when compared to the steaming pile that is Vista. In Win 7 things are easy to find, the OS is easy to navigate, and most importantly, things actually work. The GUI is very nice, far better than in XP.

I still multi boot between XP, Win 7, and Ubuntu. Battlefiel 1942 and it's mods simply run better in XP, same as some other older games.
