KOREAN TV MAKER LG has launched its range of LW series Cinema 3D TVs at its show in Soho today, which will be available this month from £649.

The LW range consists of the LW450U, LW550T and the LW650T. Each use passive 3D technology that uses the same polarisation method found in cinemas, hence the branding of Cinema 3D. LG will be supplying each TV with seven pairs of the glasses in an effort to appeal to socially active and family consumers.

This range will come in various panel sizes, including 32-inch for the LW450 only, 42-inch, 47-inch and 55-inch models. They feature an LED panel and support HD 1080p picture quality for 2D and 3D content. The LW450U and LW550T models have a refresh rate of 100Hz whilst the LW650T has double that at 200Hz.

Even though LG didn't mention it today, the LW series TVs all feature 2D to 3D conversion, which is a capability Toshiba also announced this week in its latest range of TVs. The LW550T and LW650T both feature Freeview HD and LG's Smart TV that gives users 'premium content' such as the BBC's Iplayer, Youtube, Facebook and Twitter They also offer web browsing, streaming over DNLA and downloadable applications.

An LG partnership with Sky means that existing Sky customers can get up to £400 off an LG Cinema 3D TV until 7 June.

As well as the traditional remote, users can control the TV using either LG's Magic Motion Remote that works exactly the same way as Nintendo's Wii Remote. The Magic Motion Remote can be bundled with TVs or as a £40 extra. Alternatively, users with an Apple or Android phone can download a free app to control the TV.

If you already own a TV but want to upgrade it to be a 'Smart TV', LG has also launched a small external HDMI box called the ST600 that will interface LG's Smart TV to an existing TV for around £100.

Along with Samsung, LG's plasma TV range uses active shutter technology. LG told The INQUIRER that these will be available around three or four weeks after the LW series.

When asked about its plans for glasses-free 3D technology, LG told The INQUIRER that it is looking into developing the technology and wants to release it to offer the same or better experience and quality as its current range. LG believes that consumers won't accept anything lower quality than shutter glasses technology.

Although Toshiba announced in Rome this week that will release large panel glasses-free TVs in the next 12 months, LG told The INQUIRER that it has set no timeframe or target for when it aims to do the same. µ

LW650T

I have just recently got one of these TV's after seeing it at the Gadget Show Live Show last week. The picture quality of this product is very good with the LED technology to make the colours and picture very crisp.

This is the Cinema 3D version and is LG's latest 2011 range. With the 3D it gives you full 1080p HD quality of pictures where as some 3D TV's used to be only able to give you half that.

When testing the 3D on this tv it is just as LG states on their website and is just like the 3D that you see at the cinema but with one better side to it, it will not cost you alot to have all your friends and family around to see a 3D film or just you the 2D conversion to watch 2D pictures in 3D.

The Tv comes with 7 pairs of passive 3D glasses in the box and if that is not enough for you, JUST USE THE ONES YOU GET FROM THE CINEMA. Also if you need to buy anymore they will only cost around £2 a apair unlike the active ones.

The viewing angle of this tv is also very good, the only place I found that you can not watch 3D on this tv is if you look at it from about 1 or 2 foot from above, any where else you can see the screen perfectly.

With the standard tv picture this tv brings the picture upto near HD quality due to the LED tech inside.

I HAVE HESITATED IN BUYING A 3D TV DUE TO PRICE AND QUALITY, BUT WHEN I SAW THIS ONE AND TESTED IT I HAD TO HAVE IT.

overall this is a brilliant all round TV, if you have thought hard about getting a tv and decided not to due to the tech of 3D and expense STOP this beats it all for value for money, also if you are a SKY customer you could get upto £400 off.

How good are the Glasses?

First, I think this is the way to go to get faster 3D uptake by consumers. There is clear evidence that the consumer has rejected active systems and finds passive systems much more satisfactory.

Interesting that LG will supply 7 pairs of glasses in the box. I just wonder whether the performance of these glasses matches the "RealD certified" levels achieved by RealD flat lenses and by the curved lens premium versions from the likes of Polaroid Eyewear and Oakley? From my own experience using curved lenses is a big advantage versus flat lens as they dramatically cut down on rear-lens reflection into the eye. It would be a shame if LG have cut corners on the eyewear.
