ONLINE HACKTIVIST GROUP Anonymous has turned its attention and resources to Sony after the Japanese firm took heavy handed legal action against security hacker George Hotz.
Hotz, better known on the Internet by the handle of geohot, initially rose to prominence in 2007 with the first demonstrated unlocking of Apple's Iphone. However Hotz really hit the headlines with his Playstation 3 hack that led to Sony filing a lawsuit against him.
In jurisdictional discovery, Sony has managed to gain access to Hotz's Paypal account and even wants to find out who else read Hotz's instructions for jailbreaking the Playstation 3. So it is no surprise that Anonymous, a loosely affiliated collection of youths that views itself as the bringer of justice on behalf of the oppressed, has shifted its crosshairs onto Sony.
In what has become standard practice for Anonymous, it publicly called out Sony saying the firm had "abused the judicial system in an attempt to censor information". It told Sony it had "victimised your own customers for merely possessing and sharing information".
Ominously for Sony, Anonymous' communique ends with its signature statement, "Now you will experience the wrath of Anonymous," adding, "Expect us".
Unlike some other Anonymoous targets, given Sony's breadth of operations it's hard to see how the company can protect all of its frontline web properties. Obvious targets are the firm's Playstation websites and the Playstation Network itself, but its electronics, music and film divisions could also be targeted.
Now all that's left to do is sit back and wait for Sony's impending embarrassment. µ

It takes a real coward to hide behind a computer screen and make threats.
Its even more cowardous that they hide behind screen names and nearly every member wants to remain unknown.
There was a time, when if you wanted to make a point, you got your ass out of the house and rolled up into somebodys face and shouted your point.
It was called the 60's and 70's and all the years before it.
Now we have a bunch of 18 year old computer nerds who are willing to take a stand, but only if they remain unknown and anonymous and do it from the comfort of there mothers house.
There was a time when if you wanted to protest something, you had to show up in person to do it and risk life, limb and personal safety.
Rallies, protests, sit-ins, you name it.
Now we have faggots with computers out to destroy a company because one of there fellow virgins couldn't play his own video games on the ps3.
boo fucking hoo.
This may be the most powerful guy right now
I support anonymous and all their movements, people have to look at the bigger picture and stop being so selfish and just looking at what the taking down of Sony has done to them. Ask yourself this, By taking down Sony what will be accomplished for ALL?
http://geohot.com/ if he for geo why hack is site unless it is geo check the site and let me know what u think
Well i think Sony are within their rights. Yes we buy and own our ps3's but the network is still sony's.
They have the right to protect their company and i would do the same. I mean the guy's breaking the law for fucks sake. I mean your all a bunch of childish idiot's.
Get over it and don't buy sony products again if you don't want to.
I'm sticking with Sony and if i were them i'd find the people responsible, slit their throats and shit down their necks.
yeah, way to go anonomous. How to alienate the very people you claim to be 'liberating'. Who said you could decide how i spend my time (or not )? Your so up yourselves that you don't realise your acting just like the control you claim to resist. Sad computer geeks ruining it for everyone else because someone told them off. Untermensche.
@Jordan: I couldn't agree with you more.
Whether you agree with what Sony has done or not, it doesn't give Anonymous the right to do this. I really wasn't impressed with their little poster--they sound like a bunch of immature kids on some power trip. Probably are, but either way it really doesn't matter in the end; they'll get what's coming to them.
No one forces you to buy their products. And just because you buy their units doesn't mean you get to steal software that developers create.
Don't get me wrong, I like downloading stuff for free like most people, but don't try to hold some moral high ground here. That's just silly.
Without PAID developers, you wouldn't have these awesome games to steal in the first place.
Dont buy anything SONY. Boycott
Agreed with Jordan. Every member of Anonymous should have a big, strong companion waiting for their asses (Literally) to get hauled in. Don't drop the soap, boys.
And I hope you get that treatment over and over for a long ass time.
Anonymous is just a band of criminals trying to find a prison cell. Attacking Sony or anyone else via DDoS is a crime and the criminals should be punished.
If you don't like how Sony does business, then don't buy their products. No one is holding a gun to your head.
Like the title says, I cannot condone a DDoS attack. That is clearly wrong. However, what I can, have since the 2005 Sony rootkit, and will continue to do is steer as many people away from Sony as I can. We do have alternatives to this company.
Agreed. You don't know what you're talking about, sir.
Terms of Service are all well and good... but those terms are unacceptable. Not being able to do what you want with a product you have bought and paid taxes for? And sony has taken away services promised in the product?
It's all bullshit, and Geohot has our full support.
Um... are you sure your name isn't Richard instead of Robert, because you sound like a DICK?
If it were not for the hackers, you would not be able to jerk off to your favorite sex tapes you idiot!
Not to mention that if there were no hackers there would be no Internet for you to show off your stupidity to everyone around.
Now go back to your place and continue watching Fox while eating your own shit.
The more criminals from Anonymous that they prosecute and incarcerate, the better. The only good hakcer is dead or in prison for a long, long time.
Anyone to stupide to read the TOS before purchasing, deserves what they get.
I can't stand Sony and its corporate browbeating of customers.
I hope Anonymous really rocks their boat.
This is relevant to my interests
It's not just youth that are a part of 'Anonymous'.
Hope this helps.
Man I really love Sony products. After seeing this and looking into it some more I just cant do Sony products anymore. I was just about to recommend several new HD TVs for a school in the area. I guess I will have to go back to the drawing board and research alternatives to Sony products. WOW. Good work Sony. :-(
Now there a rootkit scum bag company. When you buy a product its your to do what ever you want with it. Company's who try to tell what you can and can't do with YOUR product have no business doing so. I really can not stand sony and would never buy any of its products.
...suck my left te$ticle, and they have to pay me for the privilege
I buy the thing, I can do what I want with it..............
