JAPANESE GAMES VENDOR Nintendo has shifted a shedload of its 3DS console in its opening few days.
Despite crash issues at launch and a required system upgrade, it seems that UK fans can't get enough of Nintendo's glasses-free 3DS games console. The 3DS sold 303,000 units in Europe and 113,000 units in the UK in the first two days after hitting the shelves.
Nintendo claimed the 3DS is its fastest selling console across the UK, beating the initial 106,000 Wii sales. The Japanese company also claimed the 3DS was its fastest selling handheld console sold in Europe in the first few days. Actually, Nintendo made the claim that it was the fastest ever selling Nintendo handheld sold because it hasn't quite beaten Sony's PSP sales.
In 2005 Sony's PSP sold 185,000 units in the first four days in the UK alone. Assuming the 3DS maintains the same sales trajectory over the next two days, it will beat Sony's PSP. However, as yet Nintendo has released UK and European sales figures for only the first two days.
While Nintendo has been heralding its sales figures, shiny toy maker Apple has been strangely quiet. We tried to contact Apple for a comparison of Ipad 2 sales for the first two days in the UK and Europe to no avail. It's not like the cappuccino company hasn't had the demand, and we note that the Ipad 2 is already out of stock in the UK.
All we know is that analysts have reckoned that Apple shifted 400,000 to 600,000 units in the first three days of sale in the US. So for a guesstimate of UK sales in the first two days to see if the Ipad 2 outsold the 3DS, you do the math. Answers on a postcard or in the comments below, if you will. µ
