Qnap releases apps for NAS servers

Blurs the line between server and NAS
Thu Mar 31 2011, 12:29

HARDWARE MAKER Qnap has released four Qnap package (QPKG) apps for its range of network attached storage (NAS) servers that are available to download for free.

The four new applications for the NAS servers include Pyload, Transmission, Gallery and Piwik and are downloadable via the Qnap NAS management software. Qnap says that these apps extend NAS usability from pure server storage to a download machine, multimedia sharing centre and IP TV streaming.

The first app is Pyload, a lightweight, full-featured, downloaded manager for use with common download websites such as Rapidshare as well as plain HTTP or FTP links. Transmission is a Bittorrent client with a simple interface built on a cross-platform back end.

The Gallery app is a photo organiser with an intuitive web interface and Piwik is a real-time web analytics app for producing reports detailing website visitor information.

Qnap recently released V3.4, an update to its NAS management tool, and has confirmed updates to three of its existing QPKG apps - PS3 Media Server, Wordpress and OpenLDAP.

James Wu, product manager at Qnap said, "The QPKG platform is a great feature for users to explore unlimited possibilities of what a QNAP NAS is capable of." µ

So this is the plan:

First, we build a centralized data store - NAS. Everything is cool. After a while, we see a marketing opportunity and add file transfer capabilities. Well, now the NAS is open to the world - need firewall and antivirus. Oops - the lowly Atom CPU does not have the power for that, especially that the pesky users want to also store big files simultaneously on the machine.. so faster CPU, more memory, bigger power supply. Well, a audio/video streaming would be nice, since we have the infrastructure. Oh baby yes...
Hey, we need a GUI to manage all of this. Faster graphics in store. What the f__k - we now have a full PC with RAID in it. Well... Hm..
