UK TELECOM REGULATOR Ofcom has proposed lower prices for broadband, an idea that it expects will be accepted.
Ofcom thinks that BT should lower its wholesale prices for its Openreach landline and broadband services, which will affect both BT customers and customers of other telcos who rent access to BT networks.
The idea is that companies dependent on copper networks installed by BT will have to pay less to it and can therefore pass those savings on to their own customers. This will affect both local loop unbundling and wholesale line rental, which accounts for installation of third party equipment on BT exchanges and full rental of existing BT networks.
The proposed price decreases are between 1.2 and 4.2 per cent on fully unbundled lines, which currently have a wholesale price of £89.10. It recommends larger decreases of between 11.6 and 14.6 per cent for shared unbundled lines, which have a current price tag of £15.04 per year. Ofcom also suggested a cut of between 3.1 and 6.1 per cent for wholesale line rental prices, which currently clock in at £103.68 per year.
BT's dominant position in the market means that its prices are regulated by Ofcom, giving it little choice but to comply with these recommendations.
The price changes are expected to come into effect later this year and run until the end of March 2014. µ

With seniority comes wisdom, pragmatism, and back to basics too, oka innocence [if only because “stirring down there” has given way to stirring cuppas]. For some, however, old age is only the moment for a creaky backbone, wasting muscles, and being long in the teeth. But not all is lost because for a paper tiger, nothing is ever lost … nor gained. This mantle piece of a display has always been and always will be, a running dog for its bum pals, the “Industry Leaders”. For this bastion of hypocrisy and insincerity, back to basics are their pension schemes, its crinkly reach being even more impressive - like reaching for the barn door handle at the moment of expose and flight - of its bum pals and all at the behest of The Inland Revenue, strange bedfellows not being seen nor heard, hopefully.
Whaat the ‘ell is goin’ on boyos? “BT” coming clean, again and again? C’mon, you’re havin’ a laugh, right? The Iron Vun might be dribbling and bubbling and Lord Older is defo getting older, but “BT” will always be another Old Boy. You won’t dare, you creaky old thing you. And so ends the tale of deceit, hypocrisy, pheonixes and flames and once again the mirror is forced to report that, “You are the prettiest of ‘em all, honest !!” Well done chaps and let’s call this incarnation, The Dance of the Whirling Devilish. Does any know-eet-all-really-know-nuffin’ realised that “Government” is not about governence but about control whilst remembering that control is merely latent abandonment. You have to be when gambling is the only option. Now, is it going to this or that - Just throw that damn dice …. and leave pretty boy to do all the justifying.
Great that they are reducing prices - but I think they need to tier the pricing based on achived speed.
I am paying for an upto 20Mbit service and actually getting close to about 1.5Mbit. Why should I pay the same as soneone who is getting the top speed ?
