Hotmail will allow emails to run Javascript

To make content more interactive
Wed Mar 30 2011, 15:06

EMAIL SERVICE PROVIDER Microsoft will allow companies to run Javascript code within Hotmail users' mailboxes.

Microsoft has said that its Hotmail service will analyse email and present certain forms of content in a way that it believes is the "most common things people do when they receive the email". This means that groups of images will automatically be put into a slideshow or videos will be embedded directly in emails from simple Youtube links.

In a bid to keep users on Hotmail's website, Microsoft has launched a sandboxed environment that it says will allow partners to "insert dynamic content that is up to date and interactive with common tasks through the use of Javascript". And here we thought HTML emails were bad enough.

Microsoft is labeling this as Active Views, a billion of which, it claims, have already been served. The firm is claiming that Active Views increase user interaction with the contents of an email. According to Microsoft, less than 10 per cent of people click on a text link, while 25 per cent click on the video controls that are presented by Hotmail's Active Views.

Hotmail users will have to hope that Microsoft has placed very tight controls on the sandbox. However given that Microsoft has taken the sensible step of allowing its partners to only execute Javascript code in the sandbox, users should be relatively safe.

Email service providers such as Microsoft, Yahoo and Google are developing such features to keep email popularity high. In recent years greater numbers of users have been opting to use instant messages and messaging systems on social networks instead of traditional email.

Whether having content displayed within your webmail inbox will keep people using email remains to be seen. µ

Security

I have no problem with emails being allowed to run on Java script, providing security is strengthened, that's ok with me.!!!

According to MS

"while 25 per cent click on the video controls that are presented by Hotmail's Active Views" -
probably on the "STOP" control to stop the damn thing.

Also, I wonder if MS gets a cut from mobile operators who would see paid-for BW goes up by leaps and bounds

very bad

javascript. Only javascript. No harm ever came from sending someone javascript? Author should google "cross-site scripting", since it is up there with sql injection as the most exploited and monetized vulnerabilities.

I keep my money in a paper sack on the lawn. The sack is shut, so it is "relatively safe".

Excellent!

A new way to install viruses on Windows PCs - just spam the crap out of Hotmail and exploit the ActiveX/Javascript code that MS will inevitably fail to properly check for security holes!

This is an excellent example of why I abandoned Hotmail after Microsoft bought it.

15 years old and not used for a reason

But it does sound like MS is trying to catch up at last.

Not interested

I want simple email, just text without pictures or videos. A link to a video is good enough. Then I can decide if I want to go watch the video or not. All this extra bullcrap is what keeps getting people's PCs infected with malware and viruses.

Oh man!!!

I get bombarded with spam in Hotmail and now Microsoft is going to allow a Javascript nightmare.
