TIN BOX MAKER Dell claims that Apple's Ipad will ultimately fail, particularly in the business sector.
Andy Lark, Dell's global head of marketing for large enterprises and public organisations, told CIO Australia that Apple created a market for tablets, for which Dell is grateful, but that it will ultimately lose out to its primary rival, Google's Android, which has been gaining momentum on dozens of tablets with various specifications in different price ranges.
Lark said that in the long term "open, capable and affordable will win, not closed, high price and proprietary." He particularly condemned the price of getting a fully kitted out Ipad, with keyboard, mouse and case, which carries a price tag of between $1,500 and $1,600, which he says is "not feasible" and double the price of available alternatives.
It's hard to argue against those points, as Android is definitely more open and significantly less expensive thanks to competition by multiple manufacturers. Apple fanbois might debate that the Ipad is more capable, but the higher specifications of many Android alternatives tends to destroy that notion.
Lark said that Apple is great, "if you've got a lot of money and live on an island". He said it's not great when living in a "diverse, open, connected enterprise", adding that "simple things become quite complex".
Of course, there's no doubt that Apple isn't really aiming for the business market, as most of its products are consumer oriented, but that leaves the door open to rivals like RIM and Dell. Dell says it's taking an enterprise approach towards the tablet market, which it believes will give it a long-term edge over Apple. µ
I have just been looking at the Dell Streak on the Dell site. It's half the size and the same the price as the iPad (bar 1p).
So, who has the overpriced product? HUH?
I'm waiting?
News flash for DELL - Apple already won! They single handedly built and deployed a wildly successful tablet, and shipments have accelerated even after the first refresh.
If Dell marketing is arguing that in the long run we are all dead - well so what.
Reality is that even as the iPOD market shrinks, Apple has replaced them with iPADs - at twice the average selling price. Do you think they have a third ring in their circus as they monetize digital content through Apps stores?
OMG someone actually said Apple might have competition in the future.

*It's hard to argue with these points*???
It's exceptionally easy. Adding a mouse and keyboard cannot possibly cost $700 unless you are getting a gold plated one. Android devices have yet to undercut the iPad on price. The few that have been released are crippled in some way, and cost more to boot.
It's hard to argue? It must be hard to write such trash with a straight face.
What Google-based tablets? The only one of which I am aware is some 7-inch tablet that is too small to be of any value. Everything else is just vaporware, meaning that it's not available for sale anywhere at this time.
In other words, there is no competition for the iPad. Call me back when there is anything else I can actually buy at a store.
Various people have been claiming that the iPad would fail from the day it was announced and I must admit, I was unsure of it at that time. However, the iPad can not be a "failure" anymore since even if Apple never sold another one after today, it would go down in history as a very successful product. Successful products make money for the company that sells them and this one has performed beyond almost all expectations.
the Galaxy Tab IS a phone. One thing fewer to carry and remember to charge. As for tethering, your telephone provider will probably charge you for it if it's allowed at all. All of the phone contracts I've seen are for Internet on the phone only, and on some it's an extra even for that.
Finally an article that isnt pro-apple on the issue.
Its amazing how many journalists are apple fanbois and have completely canned Dell for this.
... disappeared even before this fiasco:

"Dell Settles in Court over Alleged Defective Capacitor Cover Up"
have some of that what he was smoking?
@ aperson - just for the record, my Android tablet works with mice. I don't know why I'd want to do that, but it does.
I disagree with the article, though. Not about Apple losing to Android devices (their many permutations, price ranges and feature differences will fill all kinds of niches the iPad cannot) but rather the comments on Android and the current state of their tablets in general.
There is little 'openness' going on right now, as Google are holding on to Honeycomb for some stupid reason (to prevent people shoehorning it onto phones, I think). So us Froyo tablet users are stuck in limbo waiting for details on the previously rosy prospect of an update to Honeycomb. Without Honeycomb, these are basically fat phones. The apps are unoptimised for big screens, which requires frameworks only currently available in Honeycomb unless it's hard-coded.
The App Market for 2.2 tablets is a poor substitute for the Honeycomb variant, as it's designed for phones. To their credit Google stated that Froyo was *not* for tablets, but of _course_ people are going to do what they want with an open OS. Google could've chipped in with a few tablet-optimised apps, just for good will.
Here's hoping they pull their fingers our and release Honeycomb to ASOP pronto.
If this shallow, inaccurate, inept, and utterly mindless drivel is representative of your work, I'd be looking for alternatives; because a journalist you are not.
Are you kidding me? This overpaid numpty at DELL included a mouse in the huge list of accessories for a touch screen device?
A, you can't and would never get a mouse.
B, Who needs all those accessories? Nobody! You either need a case, or a keyboard and FYI DELL-BOY it comes with the best keyboard in the world.
DELL quoted Apple Retail would also fail, it's THE most successful retail business in the world earning more money per sq foot than any other retail business in the world!
Yet again DELL you spout just as much crap as you make!
Problem is a lot of the iPads competitors have missed the point. For a comparable Android tablet (i.e. one that doesn't suck), you're actually paying a higher price (Galaxy anyone?). OK you may be getting 3g, but is that really all that, especially when you can tether using your Jesus Phone. I've been a critic of the iPad since it launched last year, mailnly due to price and smarminess, but when Motorola turn round and launch a tablet at a considerably higher cost (ok with the aforementioned 3g), is there that much to criticise the iPad for in a pricing context?
"Google's Android, which has been gaining momentum on dozens of tablets"
Xoom is the only non-Apple tablet with a tablet OS (Honeycomb) and it is only available in the US (until next week, when you can get it in the U.K.).
Dell = FUD
The most expensive iPad you can buy costs $829. He thinks that a case and keyboard (no need for a mouse) costs $770?
Thanks Andy, your spot on. I live on an island and have plenty of money and love my iPad
Dell's marketing bods clearly know their stuff if they're pricing up an iPad with a mouse.
the thing starts at $499, and check this out
http://www.amazon.com/Kensington-KeyFolio-Bluetooth-Keyboard-K39294US/dp/B0043TB9D6
a keyboard case for $50. that comes out to a whopping $549 + tax. "Fully tricked out?" its all the same, what good is a few more gigs of memory when you have the cloud anyways.
Last time Dell talked, they told the world that Apple should dissolve and distribute cash among shareholders... Now Apple is worth more than Dell.. I think Dell should just STFU. ;)
You keep telling yourself that.
If Android is so open, how come Google are only giving it to Motorola to use?
Surely everyone should be getting it at the same time?
Then there's the fragmentation of the different versions of the OS. Some people not getting essential bug fixes etc because they're stuck on a previous version
I'm not saying iOS is perfect, but neither is Android
I just can't see Apple 'ultimately failing' with the iPad. They've already made a boat load of cash. By the time everyone else catches up, they'll be onto making the next big thing :P
