SOFTWARE DEVELOPER Microsoft has announced a technology preview of Windows Thin PC.
Microsoft announced it would be releasing a preview of Windows Thin PC last month, now a public technology preview release has been made available. However Microsoft confirmed that the final release will be only for Microsoft's Software Assurance customers.
The operating system is a "locked down version" of Windows 7, which Microsoft's blogger Karri Alexion-Tiernan said will allow firms to repurpose old hardware into useful machines.
Windows Thin PC has support for Microsoft's own virtualisation technologies in Windows Server 2008 R2 including RemoteFX, System Center Configuration Manager and a write filter to stop users and applications from writing to disk. That last feature should interest just about every system administrator who wants to mitigate network exposure from user download applications.
Microsoft's decision to launch a cut down version of Windows 7 to turn otherwise obsolete machines into thin clients is something that many firms will welcome. As Windows' demands increase older machines start to struggle, with many IT departments looking to load Linux on them.
While Linux might make more efficient use of hardware, giving IT departments the choice of installing a lightweight, supported version of Windows gives them a chance to keep those who are unwilling to change from Microsoft happy.
The release of Windows Thin PC goes to show that Microsoft is fighting Linux in more areas than ever before, from accommodating older hardware to smartphones. µ

HA HA HA HA Funniest thing I have ever heard! HA HA HA HA
I am surprised that Ballmer has given the green light to this initiative.
Windows thin and light ? If it works, geeks will be clamoring for a more customizable Windows, like Linux is now, and the munitions they require to prove it is possible will have been given to them on a silver platter. After all, what if you don't want DirectX because it's a work laptop ?
If this thin initiative actually takes off and is shown to work, down the line it will wreak havoc with the full-fat version.
This is wonderful as microsoft gets to keep selling software but companies arent forced to purchase new hardware at the same time. I'm building a new 16 Core server with a FirePro v6800 GPU for a client with 35 concurrent RDC Sessions and the thin clients run better than the desktops do! now i can make the handful of P4 machines run at acceptable levels once again!
