3D glasses compatibility standard gets green light

Should work for TVs, computers, projectors and cinemas
Tue Mar 29 2011, 09:38

PANASONIC AND XPAND 3D have proposed M-3DI, a 3D active-shutter glasses standard for compatibility between the likes of TVs, computers, projectors and cinema screens.

The standard is also being supported by a number of major electronics companies, including Mitsubishi, Hitachi, Changhong, Seiko Epson, Hisense, SIM2 Multimedia and Viewsonic. However, it will need the support of the main producers of 3D TVs, such as Samsung, LG and Sony, if it is to offer full compatibility.

Xpand 3D claims that M-3DI will eliminate confusion and provide a strong, uniform standard that benefits consumers, since it means that one set of glasses should work across the board. Unlike the current situation where different brands of glasses are not compatible with other branded TVs. Sounds like another VHS, Betamax situation to us.

Supporters of the standard believe that it will help accelerate sales of 3D TVs, which so far have not gone as well as many companies would have liked. Primarily due to price and constraints on things like glasses, or the loss of them more like. At about £100 each they are expensive to replace.

Initially the licensed technology will involve infrared, but there are plans for adding radio frequency support in the future. Licensing for the standard will start next month. µ

Finally

I've been a believer that the 3D-TV is currently a FAD and will go away without standardization. So this is a great advancement and makes sense because competitors will now need to price ther active glasses at competitive rates, competition will follow and the end user benefits while they tech advances faster as companies try to make their standardized product better than the next! now if they could do similar the passive and then glasses free 3d technologies, 3 ways to get to the same result to battle it out without customers having to worry about their product being discontinued and no longer being able to find accessories. 3 standards, and then let the consumers battle it out for whatever is the best and maybe 1 standard will prevail. obviously the glasses-less would be #1 to most people but a glasses version would still sell if the realism is better

Agree with DG... PLUS

Very important note missed in the article is that standardizing the glasses will drive manufacturing costs down. Once there is one standard, our friends in China will be able to fire up those coal burning, petroleum laden factories and start churning out the the glasses.

That is the final barrier which is preventing active shutter glasses from being more reasonably priced at 10-15$ per pair.

They are correct in guestimating that this will accelerate sales, driving costs down usually does. Now I can carry my active shades over to my mates house to watch a movie, and now worry that he has an LG and I've got a Panny. I only hope the manufacturers see it this way as well.

Active glasses provide the best effect with the highest clarity and resolution while offering the least ghosting.

Head aching inducing? That's such an 80's or linearly polarized comment.

Right direction.

I think that this represents a step forward in the right direction. Why they didn't think to make a standard for the tech in the first place is beyond me. After all, they have had plenty of costly lessons from the past.

DG, they already offer them here in the US. You can get almost any style including a pair that can actually be used as sunglasses (100% UV protection). They still gouge us, though.

cinema screens

Will never happen in cinemas - far too much investment in RealD, which is better for massed audiences anyway at pence rather than many pounds per viewer.

"Two tickets for Toy Story 3 please"
"That'll be £214 please"
"HOW much?!"
"You can keep the glasses afterwards"
"Gee, thanks"

What LAMMJR said, except porn

I agree with what LAMMJR said, except with the case when the material is pornography.

waste of time and money

They can do the rain dance for all I care.

I'm not sitting in front of the TV/Computer with a stupid headache inducing pair of glasses.

This whole 3d tv push is a waste of time and money, IMO.
