Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 will get Android 2.3 Gingerbread

Later this year
Fri Mar 25 2011, 15:01

SMARTPHONE MAKER Sony Ericsson has announced that its flagship smartphone, the Xperia X10, will eventually get an update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread in the coming months.

After initially announcing that the Xperia X10 would not get any updates beyond Android 2.1 Éclair, Sony Ericsson has issued a blog post saying, much to the relief of its customers after a long battle, that the phone will get the update towards the end of the second quarter or early in the third this year.

But hold on, not all Xperia X10 owners will receive the upgrade. Sony says in its blog, "Due to the resources available in this special project, we will focus on delivering trade versions of the software." So it is very explicit in saying that some of its customers might not get the update.

Android 2.3 Gingerbread won't be rolled out to the phones over the air but via PC-based upgrade clients. All your personal settings and content will be lost, said Sony Ericsson, so you'll have to make sure you back up all your data before you upgrade. The firm also said the software update to Gingerbread will be the last for the X10 model.

The Xperia X10's little brother, the X10 Mini, will not be getting the upgrade, as Sony Ericsson has said, "we have no such plans". µ

Do it yourself

Why wait for the official 2.3 if you can root your phone now and install 2.2 Froyo or, even better 2.3? Even when SE reaches 2.3, custom roms will still lead the way in terms of speed, tweaking and apps.

Wait no longer, learn how to install 2.2 Froyo yourself Mylifewithx10.blogspot.com

Unlock

Bill,

There us no reason to be locked to your operator. Unlock and unbrand your phone with any means you can find! I did, and even rooted mine. Could not be happier!

really??

Nice..
I'm still waiting for the 2.1 update from AT&T and still running Donuts 1.6. Sony Ericsson Facebook mentions the update few months ago/last year. Is this a marketing buzz to announce the incoming phone soon to release - what's the name of this handset again.. :)
