Intel stretches its lead over AMD in the global chip market

At least for now
Fri Mar 25 2011, 11:58

CHIPMAKER Intel is still way, way ahead as the global chip industry leader, followed by Advanced Micro Designs (AMD), which appears to have lost ground.

According to research by Isuppli, Intel had an 81 per cent share of the global microprocessor market last year, up by 0.4 per cent. That might not sound like much of a increase, but when you consider the overwhelming dominance Chipzilla has that's still a pretty good year.

It is still a two-horse race, but the nag in second is falling behind as AMD's 2010 share of microprocessor revenue fell by 0.8 per cent to 11.4 per cent. Intel's huge market share wasn't much of a surprise, as its lead was built up across two decades and nothing spectacularly changed in the PC market in 2010 apart from the welcome recovery from the previous year's recession.

But this obviously won't make pleasant reading for AMD, though 2011 could be better if its Fusion line released earlier this year makes an impression. Intel has also had some well documented problems this year, which could dent its reputation, sales and gross margins a little.

The analysts at Isuppli said that a flood of tablet devices this year might offer hope to the 'other' companies, which increased market share from 7.1 per cent to 7.5 per cent. The report mentioned the Ipad A5 chip, which was designed by Apple and manufactured by Samsung. µ

Stop Making Excuses For AMD

Blah Blah Blah to those still complaining about intel's practices. Didn't all those decisions by those governing bodies include requirements that intel stop these practices? Of course they did, and intel agreed to all of those requirements. So, how can this still be an excuse for AMD's failures? It's not. Maybe AMD's poor business performance problems are not intel's fault right now at all, maybe the blame should be placed where it belongs..... On AMD.

Intel's Bribes and THREATS Monoplize and Win

Intel's illegal, secret bribes and threats are paying off. The NY Attorney Gen, US FTC, Euro Commission and Japan recently blew the cover off of Intel's worldwide manipulation of the PC makers and retailers.

What's a 1-billion dollar fine, when you can make 10-billion off of lying, cheating and monopolizing?

Yup, Intel Inside!

As long as we have AMD we're good

As long as AMD exists we can buy top performing CPUs at reasonable prices.

Let's hope the management at InHell burns in Hell for their violations of law to exploit consumers with outlandish prices. There is absolutely no reason to buy InHell products unless you want to support their criminal behavior, for which you pay.

Yep we know

Intel are producing better chips full stop. Hopefully for AMD and the consumer Bulldozer will be a knockdown. At the very least could you please provide better coolers as standard AMD? We always replace the coolers because they are so naff which takes away some of the cost-benefit!
