Dell says its supply chain was not disrupted by Japanese earthquake

Others are not so lucky

TIN BOX MAKER Dell said that the Japanese earthquake has not disrupted its supply chain.

The company, which is the second largest producer of personal computers, revealed that the disaster in Japan has so far not affected its supply chain, according to Reuters. This is good news for both the company and its customers, as Japanese supplies are vital to the technology industry.

Japan is one of the largest suppliers of parts and components needed for computers and other electronic products. According to Isuppli, the country supplies 20 per cent of global semiconductors and accounts for 14 per cent of all electronics manufacturing.

Paul Bell, head of Dell's large enterprise and public sector business, said that supply disruption "has not been material", hinting that potentially some disruption could occur down the road.

With supplies okay for now, Dell is one of the lucky ones. A quarter of all silicon wafer production has been halted due to the earthquake, while major companies like Apple face potentially stunted growth as supplies of key components are expected to dry up over the next few weeks, at least for a while. µ
