Sony claims Playstation 3 hacker fled the country

But Hotz is just on hols in South America

OVERBEARING JAPANESE COMPANY Sony has claimed that George Hotz, the Playstation 3 hacker that it's taking to court sabotaged evidence and has fled to South America.

Sony is suing the well known hacker Hotz, known as 'Geohot', in the hope of hanging him out to dry as a warning to other hackers. It has accused him of disabling his hard drives before he handed them in for evidence, and has also accused him of fleeing the US using the cash he received from well-wishers who donated money for his legal defence.

"SCEA learned that Hotz had deliberately removed integral components of his impounded hard drives prior to delivering them to a third party neutral and that Hotz is now in South America," wrote Sony in a court filing.

Sony reckoned it tracked Geohot down on a PlayStation Network account running out of his town in the US under the name "blickmanic". One of Geohot's defences is that he never signed up for a Playstation Network account, so he couldn't legally be charged with violating its terms and conditions.

But Hotz, otherwise known as Geohot online, will not go without a fight. Yesterday he posted at his blog from, well, not from the US but from South America. However, he denied he was there because he fled the country to escape from Sony's legal clutches.

"Factually, it's true I'm in South America, on a vacation I've had planned and paid for since November," wrote Hotz.

"Rest assured that not a dime of legal defence money would ever go toward something like this," he added.

Back in January, Sony obtained a restraining order against Hotz, claiming that he had violated the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act and Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. µ

Vacation Time!

He went on vacation when he realized the suit being filed against him is a frivolous one and will be dismissed.
Altering anything for personal use isn't illegal; selling it is.
As he purchased said hard drives, he can do whatever he wishes with them. They are his personal property, and are no longer under the control of Sony.

flee from what?

Sony, as much as you'd like to think of yourselves as all important, this is nothing but a civil suit, as opposed to a criminal one, so w.t.h. would he be running from? All the power to him.

Breaking in...

Breaking an entry... on his own house? and showing everyone else how to break an entry on their own houses too? How is that illegal. You bought the hardware and you are entitled to do anything you want to do with it, just as with anything else you buy. It's YOUR house, not Sony's.

OVERBEARING JAPANESE COMPANY

"OVERBEARING JAPANESE COMPANY" Is that really necessary, I mean they are only protecting their interests. And if that means stopping piracy on their platform so be it. An appropriate analogy to the offence this guy has committed against Sony is breaking and entry. He just didn't steel anything, rather he left the door open.
