Mac OS X architect to leave Apple

Over two decades on the job with Jobs

MAKER OF SHINY TOYS Apple has announced that the software architect behind Mac OS X, Bertrand Serlet is leaving the company.

Serlet held the position of SVP of Mac software engineering. The post will be taken over by Craig Federighi, who works in the same department and has managed the Mac OS project for the past two years, including the Lion release.

Serlet joined Apple in 1997 after working for Apple CEO Steve Jobs at Next Computers from 1989. This means he has worked with Jobs for 22 years, which could explain his reason for wanting a change of pace.

Serlet said that he wants to focus less on products and more on science. He holds a doctorate in computer science from the University of Orsay in France. He did not indicate if he would return to academia or join a research institute. µ
