Motorola buys into IPTV

Mobility arm grabs Swedish Dreampark
Wed Mar 23 2011, 16:15

NETWORK EQUIPMENT MAKER Motorola Mobility will acquire the Swedish IPTV software firm Dreampark, an Internet television personalisation middleware developer.

The acquisition is expected to close this Spring and financial details have not been disclosed. Motorola did say that the company will be integrated into its set-top box building Converged Experiences business, which is part of the recently spun off Mobility business.

Dreampark develops software that network operators can use to customise Internet television portals, which are expected to increase in use as more services are launched and Internet protocol TV sets are released.

Motorola Mobility added that it will let service providers use HTML and scalable vector graphics as well as easy to use software development kits to build viewing portals that presumably will pull together content from a range of sources in an appealing manner. Motorola will take the entire Dreampark portfolio and fold it into its Medios service management suite.

"This transaction enables us to continue to enhance our Medios software portfolio and capitalise upon the convergence of wireless technology, media, mobile computing and the Internet," said John Burke, SVP and general manager of Motorola Mobility's Converged Experiences business.

"With the acquisition of Dreampark, Motorola Mobility will strengthen its ability to provide systems integrators, service providers, enterprises and content providers with innovative solutions for deploying converged media experiences. It's great to have the Dreampark team on board."

Per Skyttvall, CEO of Dreampark added, "It's a fast-evolving time in the industry as consumers are looking to view content on their own terms, and we are excited to be extending our software innovation across multiple devices as a result of this agreement with Motorola Mobility." µ

You have my deepest sympathy

I feel for the Dreampark guys, having been part of one of Motorola's purchases. Welcome to unbelievable levels of red-tape and politics, say goodbye to innovation and flexibility. You are now a number.
