Mozilla confirms over 10 million Firefox 4 downloads in 24 hours

Updated exclusive More than quadruples Microsoft's IE9 record
Wed Mar 23 2011, 15:06

OPEN SOURCE browser developer Mozilla has confirmed to The INQUIRER that Firefox 4 has smashed the download 'record' recently set by Microsoft's Internet Explorer 9.

Last week Microsoft proudly proclaimed that its Internet Explorer 9 web browser had been downloaded over 2.3 million times within 24 hours, however by this morning Mozilla's Firefox 4 download counter had passed the 4 million mark and Mozilla has just confirmed to The INQUIRER that over 5 million downloads have been logged within 24 hours.

Mozilla's Firefox 4 is the first major release of the popular open source web browser in two years and it brings significant performance improvements along with user interface tweaks.

Tristan Nitot, president of Mozilla Europe told The INQUIRER, "We are thrilled to have surpassed the five million download mark within the first 24 hours of launching. Together with the global community of volunteers, we are proud to be able to provide Web users with the best possible browser experience with a faster, safer and more modern version of Firefox."

At press time Mozilla's representatives came back to tell The INQUIRER that the latest download count was just under 6.5 million within 24 hours, however with so many downloads of Firefox 4 still being requested the final 24 hour figure won't be confirmed for few hours yet.

We can easily imagine that early Firefox 4 downloads might surpass 10 million, over four times those of IE9, possibly within the first 24 hours, or almost certainly, shortly thereafter.

We wonder why Microsoft was so desperate to reveal initial Internet Explorer 9 download figures so quickly. The rollout of Internet Explorer 9 will pick up the pace once it is stuffed into the Vole's Software Update channel, but either Microsoft underestimated the popularity of Firefox or it simply scored an own goal by publicising its initial figures so early.

Mozilla's Firefox 4 is available for all the major operating systems including Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, whereas Microsoft's Internet Explorer 9 only works on Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Microsoft might find that instead of its users upgrading their operating systems to get Internet Explorer 9, they will simply try the other alternatives. In which case, Apple's Safari, Google's Chrome, Opera and especially Mozilla's Firefox 4 might be in line for increases in market share.

Update
Mozilla confirmed to The INQUIRER that Firefox 4 had been downloaded over 10 million times in 24 hours, with 7.1 million direct downloads and over 3 million updates from previous release candidate versions.

Mozilla told The INQUIRER, "Within 24 hours of Firefox 4 being announced it had been downloaded 7.1 million times, this is in addition to the more than 3 million people who were already running the release candidate that became our final version."

The figure of 7.1 million downloads fell short of Mozilla's all-time record of 8 million downloads in 24 hours for Firefox 3 back in 2008. Nevertheless, Mozzarella can be proud of another impressive showing and putting the Vole's Internet Exploder 9 download 'record' way in the shade. µ

Yawn, Opera???

Opera does not seem to CARE about who uses its ideas... If they did, they would be using the better ideas that mozilla had about speedial...

If not at least suing mozilla...

The next problem is, many people extensions just DO NOT WORK with FF4!!

So we will have to wait, until the addon guys catch up, if they can afford the time and money...

Stolen UI

With regards to Firefox 4 having the cleanest user interface that would be impossible. Download opera and look at the similarities, Opera has been like that for years and Firefox just stole the look - literally. With regards to speed it is slower than Opera and Chrome. I think its a mediocre release at best to be honest.

What I.E. record????

I'm sorry, but did you forget the 8 million downloads in one day of Firefox 3.0 that went to the Guinness Book of Records?
How can you say that Internet Exploder set a record with only 2+ millions???

COOKED BOOKS

CAN YOU SMELL THE BOOKS COOKING? I SURE CAN.
WHAT IF EACH GUY DOWNLOADED IT 20 TIMES IN 24 HRS OR PROGRAMMED A BOT TO DO IT. NOW YOU'RE TALKING SIGNIFICANTLY LESS ACTUAL DOWNLOADS.
WHO CARES ANYWAY. ITS LIKE WATCHING THE MOVIE STATS TO SEE HOW MANY MILLION$ OF CASH THE STUDIOS AND THEATERS HAVE BILKED FROM THEIR LOYAL CUSTOMERS, AND THEN PROUDLY REPORT THOSE NUMBERS, TO WIT: "LOOK HOW MUCH WE RIPPED YOU ALL OFF FOR THEN".
THIS INFORMATION IS USEFUL TO SOMEBODY IN WHAT WAY NOW?
I HASTEN TO ADD I'M NOT COMPLAINING OR ANYTHING. FAR FROM IT! LONG LIVE THEATER AND FIRE FOX.

@riDDi

riDDi yup, the automatic update in firefox only updates to patches like 3.6.12 to 3.6.14, not to major new releases like 3.0 to 4.0

and i also dont think microsoft will release IE9 as a mandatory important update to windows why? that would violate EU browser choice

FF4 is nice, why so negative Phil Mitchell?, what browser do you use? IE6 that has so many holes that it looks like swiss cheese

@Phil Mitchell

No. Mozilla has never done automatic updates between major releases. All the downloads they are seeing are by people who heard about the new version and have gone to their site to download it.

The only people prompted to update were using pre-release versions.

Nonsense claims

I suppose the next claim from a browser vendor will be that its chief rival turned its users into newts - And they DIDN'T get better!

And won't all FireBadger users on all operating systems and versions thereof have the chance to be upgraded automatically if they haven't disabled that default feature (some do but most don't), whereas IE9 is currently only available to Vista and W7 users who actively seek it out.

Either way, Firefox is still a fat bloated mess and this release merely catches up on the competition a bit. It doesn't take the lead or even equal its rivals fully, most of whom are spitting out new versions regularly so FirePheasant 4 will soon be left to rot just as V3 was before it.

People questioned at the time why Apple ignored Mozilla and went elsewhere to create Safari. In retrospect, we can see why they did that. Apple wanted a quality product because so do its users.

And people doubted

I remember seeing an article recently saying that FireFox just wasn't going to last, I think that these figures would suggest otherwise.

meh

That's probably all of FireFerret users right there

IE bunch simply do not care. A browser is a browser

and of course the legion of fanbois had an extra motivation to cue up for downloads just to spite MS.

Who cares when SRWare Iron rules the roost?
