Samsung denies poor Galaxy Tab sales

Speculation mounts over Ipad rival
Wed Mar 23 2011, 10:00

SMARTPHONE AND TABLET MAKER Samsung Electronics has denied that poor sales have led to a significant inventory of Galaxy Tab devices in its warehouses.

Speculation has mounted in recent days that Samsung is struggling to sell its tablet, which for a long time has been the main rival to Apple's Ipad.

Moneytoday also suggested that due to dwindling sales Samsung had amassed excessive inventory of Galaxy Tab units, into the hundreds of thousands.

Some suggested that Samsung would have to dramatically cut prices in efforts to compete with the recently launched Ipad 2. Given how expensive the Galaxy Tab is, we don't doubt that it needs to chop a few quid off the price if it wants to lure people away from the pricey Ipad.

A Samsung spokesman, James Chung said the company doesn't comment on market speculation. Then he commented on the market speculation, saying it was "absolutely groundless", according to Reuters.

The company said that its tablet strategy focuses on offering a broad range of products with different sizes. It has revealed 8.9-inch and 10.1-inch versions of the Galaxy Tab to add to the existing 7-inch model, which has so far sold over three million units. µ

Galaxy 10.1 does not exist.

We cannot buy it.

That's the real problem.

The original Galaxy Tab is a big cell phone:

Android < 3 == !Tablet

So there has never been a proper tablet from Samsung.

If a Honeycomb tablet ever does arrive, I'll buy it if it's not too much more than the cost of the base model iPad 2.

I wonder what the problem is

No s*** Sherlock! If Samsung realised that what people want a useful but essentially cheap / disposable tablet they would do allot better. When your up against a dominant market leader you just have to undercut it even if yours sings and dances, because the perception is there that it is not as good. If they made it £50 less than the 'equivilent' iPad they would find it easier./ not to mention not launching a new product without reducing the old models price, actually making it available in stores would help too :)

Announcing an exciting new model...

...does depress sales projections on your current line - if customers expect that postponing a purchase will give them a better deal.

In some cases - certainly software - selling the previous product with a cheap or free upgrade to the new system will keep things going. But that's tricky to do with hardware, which depreciates in value steeply both by being superseded and by being pre-owned.

It's just how the business works.

I'm a quite new and pretty satisfied 7 inch Galaxy Tab owner, but I can see where my device could be improved on, and in particular there are programs that don't fit on the landscape-oriented display that I've settled on for video playing and camera use - well done to Fat Calc, a basic calculator for stubby fat fingers, that works there. I assume the arithmetic also works...
