Windows Phone 7 application switching demonstrated

Fake multi-tasking comes to WP7
Mon Mar 21 2011, 13:52

TINKERING WITH Windows Phone 7 (WP7) has allowed one clever chap to enable an 'instant resume' feature on the operating system.

Microsoft's WP7 operating system can at times be sluggish when jumping between applications, however one hacker has managed to enable an 'instant resume' by fiddling with registry settings. The effect of this registry hack is that users can move between some applications very quickly, though the hacker admits that the change does have some "undesirable, though not crippling, side effects".

In a video, the hacker who goes by the handle of Jaxbot demonstrated that after the registry hack had been applied he could put the device to sleep or go back to the main menu and return to a game with its state intact.

What is most surprising is the relative ease with which the hacker was able to unearth this tweak by fiddling around with the registry settings on his WP7 device. Although Jaxbot does warn that the hack is for advanced users, he adds that all that is required is a developer unlocked device and setting DehydrateOnPause to 0 in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\TaskHost.

There's no word on how many applications can be kept running this way, as at some point WP7 will run out of RAM. When that happens, the phone might freeze up and have to be switched off and then rebooted. The hack could also result in lower battery life.

While none of these hacks are official, it does give users an idea of what Microsoft could do in the future with WP7 updates. Jaxbot's hack doesn't enable third party applications multi-tasking, but being able to switch between applications with stored states is something that a lot of WP7 users might settle for. µ

Mitchell Rules!

In astroturf land.

Meanwhile, tinkerer tweaks his registry settings for instant gratification, although even that pitiful level of control will probably be withheld from future Microsoft customers.

Windows Phone 7 Rules!

Windows Phone 7 does multi-task just not third party applications at launch. But if you prefer dead batteries because of background apps your not using killing your battery go ahead.

I think your just upset because the lack of multitasking at launch haters rant about is coming to an end and your almost out of bad things you can complain about except that your probably locked into a contract and cant get a Windows Phone 7. Hate to be you.

The Woeful State of Windows Phone 7

Windows Phone 7 is pitiful.

People have to hack it. Not to get some wonderful feature. No, they must hack it just to access basic OS functions.

Multitasking is a basic OS function, and Windows Phone 7 won't run 2 of the apps you install at the one time. It won't be until 2012 until Microsoft adds this basic OS function.

Windows Phone 7 is full of bugs and missing features. Bluetooth file exchange his broken. Tethering is broken. Even custom ringtones is broken (you can't set a custom ringtone in Windows Phone 7).
