A SOUTH CAROLINA local government is going paperless by replacing dead trees with Apple's Ipad 2, which is probably dead something else.
Officials in Charleston County, South Carolina will buy 15 Ipad 2 tablets to replace bundles of paper in the ever elusive attempt to become a paperless office. Say what you will, we find it hard to believe that we'll be ditching paper any time soon. It's like fusion power, always in the future.
The county estimated that it spent $27,000 every year on paper and binders. With a hefty $900 price tag for each Ipad 2, it will spend $13,500 in total this year.
"So you really have savings," Walter Smalls, a Charleston County official, said. Savings by buying expensive Apple products? The world really has gone bonkers. Imagine what they would have saved if they had bought Android tablets instead.
At least the local government is being honest and saying it's about saving money, not the environment, which probably won't benefit from the extra electricity used by the Ipads.
And don't get us started on backups of files, because computers are not always reliable for storing thousands of important government documents, at least not if there are no backup hard drives or servers to store the information as well, which surely drives up costs and work considerably.
"I like computers," Smalls told Reuters. "It's just like a shovel to me. I can dig a hole faster with a shovel than with my hand." Yeah, you're digging a hole alright.
Should the paperless attempt fail, as we expect it will, local officials can still use the Ipad 2 tablets as handy paperweights. See, they have their uses after all. µ

But I want to use tablet also as a phone
ANY tablet without a SIM (or two, rather)
does not get my money
AND not my recommendation
Personally I'm waiting for 4G (and IceCream)
If you actually didn't know, android and other tablets are more expensive than ipads. And not all ipads cost $900! That's only the 64gb WiFi + 3g! Most government offices have Wi-Fi so they don't need 3g ones and they can get $600 32gb or $700 64gb ipads. Rant over! Lol
lol, This website is silly.
Why would the better-in-every-way successor to a device that sold 15 million units be a paperweight? I want Android to succeed but aimlessly trashing a product as fine and astute as the iPad 2 just makes you sound stupid.
Thanks for one of the more idiotic posts I've ever seen. The windscreens of most cars are held in by glue, does that make them unreliable?
Likewise the cover glass for the iPad 2 screen is held in place by glue. It needs a heat gun and lots of time and prying to remove (go see iFixit's teardown for the details), the chances of it having any effect on reliability are slim to non.
The FAA rate the iPad 1 as being reliable enough to be used by pilots for electronic charts and documentation. Want to bet that the iPad 2 doesn't at least match that?
Is an iPad physically capable of being used that much? Seems like it would break. The entire thing is held together with glue.
EEE Transformer: unavailable, expected May/June
Archos 101: Android 2.2
Point of View Mobii: Android 2.1/2.2
Viewsonic G Tablet: Android 2.2
Like I said, I _do_ want an Android tablet that runs a tablet OS, not a cell phone OS.
The only thing that can be bought today is Xoom and, even if I wanted a grey import, I'm not sure that Amazon would ship it from the States.
Genuine Android Tablet DOES NOT EXIST IN U.K.
As soon as it does, I'll buy one.
Waiting...ZZZ
Not quite sure where some of these comments get their ideas from, but syncing documents is much better handled through something like DropBox - with the obvious advantages that they can be accessed from elsewhere as well.
This also means that you're not tied into Apple devices, should you wish for the more expensive Android tablets instead... :)
Given that any decent Android tablet is generally at least as expensive as an iPad, I don't see how going Android would make it cheaper.
Yes, there are a load of cheapo Chinese tablets, but they are all awful with exception, and there are a couple of half decent Android tabs (e.g. Advent Vega) that are relatively cheap - but in a business context, you would want a device that is going to be supported for at least a couple of years, and the iPad is likely to be the best in those terms.
EEE Transformer? Archos 101? Point of View Mobii? Viewsonic G Tablet? Plenty! And with good prices.
About article: they bought ipads because of fanboysm and snobbism. with Android you can back up files using microSD's, with Apple you need to synchronize with iTunes. Assuming they use the pads, they will need PC's to pair with them, or they will use a single PC for 15 ipads???? Sit in line to synchronize? Lend the PC between them for tethering? For Android you can live free without a PC, with bitten Apple you are tied to a PC to use their crap tablet.
Cor blimey, Charlie, I would but an Android tablet today if they were available. I don't mean tablet hardware with phone software, I mean Honeycoomb.
The only one available is Xoom in the U.S. I live in the U.K. and I really don't want a grey import.
Galaxy Tab 10.1? Chance would be a fine thing.
