THE INTERNET CORPORATION FOR ASSIGNED NAMES AND NUMBERS (ICANN) has approved the controversial .xxx top level domain for pornographic websites.
ICANN formally approved the application for the .xxx sponsored top level domain by ICM Registry, an organisation set up specifically to manage the adult-themed domain. It is sponsored by the International Foundation for Online Responsibility, which will develop policies for the domain.
ICANN explained its rationale behind the approval in a statement issued to the press. A number of requirements needed to be met, such as discussions with the board of ICM Registry and appropriate sponsorship by an independent organisation.
It said its approval represents a "difficult, care balance", citing the supporting and opposing viewpoints that have been expressed in the debate. It revealed that it had to weigh up extensive community advice on both sides of the argument, while also sticking to the appropriate protocols for domain approvals.
An application for the .xxx domain was first submitted in 2004. It faced a significant uphill battle over the years, with support somewhat divided among sex website owners and the general public. Initially ICANN did not believe there was any justifiable reason for the domain, but after lenghty discussions, explanations, and independent reviews, it has finally given .xxx the green light.
295,675 .xxx domains have been pre-reserved with ICM Registry so far, which is indicative of just how much desire there was out there for a top level domain for pornography. The company charges $10 per year for a domain with the .xxx extension. µ

Apart from the blatant commercial dig that is just using the article as an excuse, the thing I do not like about your comment is that you pose yourself as an alternative to the web - which is ridiculous.
On top of that, searching for your site reveals that it is entirely based on javascript - which I block automatically on non-trusted sites (and dashworlds is not going to get trusted if I cannot consult it).
Finally, from comments I could glean over the web, your "paradigm" requires an app to work, meaning that it is indeed based on the regular Internet (no surprise there).
In other words, Dashworlds looks like just another bright-eyed, pie-in-the-sky dot-com idea that attempts to disregard reality while still being mired in it.
No cookies from me.
@casper That's a local language word though, and a general word not always indicating porn.
But it does probably have to do with US prudishness too since they also most often use 'adult content' and showing an interest in using euphemisms.
@dashworlds Translated that would be "with 90 people toying with this worldwide".
And having a new DNS system does not mean it's less vulnerable really.
But I agree that there is a need to develop some systems outside the control of the boys that meet in backrooms in brussel and during G8 meetings.
But I think you must understand that sex sites won't be using that, those need an established no-effort system for the people to use, hence the 300 thousand strong interest in the xxx domains
The introduction of "xxx" will have no effect on Adult Dotcom websites: they will remain unchanged. There is a possibility that some Adult content may get duplicated at "xxx", so perhaps people will get to see the same content twice.
All ICANN has done is to re-affirm that Alternative DNS is the way forward whilst encouraging more people to vote with their feet looking for new ways to use the World Wide Web . As a direct result, Internet users now can create an unlimited range of (previously unavailable) personalised Non-ICANN domains and TLDs, completely free.
Sites such as Dashworlds.com already provide brand new Dashcom (not Dotcom) domain names. Dashcoms are addresses in format "business-com", "paris-fashion", "social-network" and of course any "xxx" extension you might desire. Totally outside the realm and control of ICANN, Internet users can create any domain in any language, instantly and at no cost.
With users and members in over 90 countries worldwide, resolution is via an APP; although new ISP Links are available to make this unnecessary (ISP Links that are also available to ICANN).
Having just one Internet floating in infinite cyberspace is like saying you can go anywhere in the USA as long as you only use route 66. So now, just as in the USA (and everywhere else in the world) the Internet has more than one option.
If the .xxx domain is created solely to handle sites with adult content why on earth don't they just make a top-level domain called .sex ?
Even though a lot of people see the triple x "word" as a synonym for sex it's also a name for a movie and could be however unlikely be misunderstood by some.
From the policies:
7. ICM fee structure shall be designed to discourage speculative registrations and/or domain sampling.
− A portion of each registration will be non-refundable, to support verification and authentication activities.
− At launch, the registration fee for resolving domains will be $60, in line with other “specialty domain” registrations fees.

And they check and double check the registrants, so those almost 300K names are all 'non speculative' registrations. That's pretty impressive, although you could pre-lock the .xxx if you had the .com as a sort of copyright issue prevention, but that does not guarantee it's acquired.
Frankly if I was in that business I'd avoid the xxx domain, you know they will start to ban it left and right and use it to find people who visit them, it's going to end bad.
Another interesting note:
Cultural/Religious Names. ICM will provide a mechanism whereby, during a specified period of no less than sixty (60) days prior to the TLD’s Limited Launch date (as defined in the Start-Up Plan), ICANN’s Government Advisory Committee and/or the government of any country or distinct economy participating in the GAC (collectively, “Governments”) may identify for reservation from registration names that match words of cultural and/or
religious significance (“Culturally Significant Names”).

So I wonder if they blocked ataturk.xxx and muhammedsexcartoons.xxx
