A REPORT from Strategy Analytics shows that Apple dominated the smartphone revenue stakes for 2010, followed by Nokia and Research in Motion (RIM).
Apple, thanks to its shiny Iphone, came out as top dog for smartphone revenue taking a total of 29 per cent market share. A massive 64 per cent of the total market share was split between three of the big names - Apple, of course, with Nokia at 20 per cent and RIM with 15 per cent.
The fruit themed company didn't win the gold medal for shipments volume, getting outdone by Nokia. The dominance of these top three vendors was dented in the fourth quarter of last year though, with the combined revenue share of the trio falling from 72 per cent to 61 per cent.
This was largely due to the popularity of Android phones, which are expected to increase sales vastly over the course of this year. This area of the market is currently dominated by Samsung and HTC with Samsung taking 9 per cent of smartphone revenue in 2010, which beat HTC's showing.
"While smartphones represented just over 22 percent of the handset market in terms of volume last year, they accounted for more than 50 percent of the market in terms of revenue," said Tom Kang, director of the wireless smartphone strategies service at Strategy Analytics. µ

Apple lead sales? Every other study says otherwise. So I guess one group knows better than every other who place Android growth ahead of Apple.
Really? You haven't seen a Samsung phone here in the UK? You must live up north in some secluded village.
Samsung beating HTC? Really? Maybe it's one of these weird regional things, like Nokia not selling in the USA, but I can't remember the last Samsung mobile I saw, Android or not over here in the good old U of K.
HTCs however are all over the place. Not counting mine and my better half's Desire Z and HD, I've seen several wildfires and numerous Desires.
I own an old ipod, that's all the Apple products I own or ever will. In fact Apples products mostly are broken over priced mediocre products at best.
But they do one that no other company does. Design, Looks. It does not matter if they work they look COOL and that's why people buy them. And because they are expensive people refuse to acknowledge they spent all that money on shinny broken junk.
They have got it made.
