BROADBAND PROVIDER Virgin Media has announced that it has reached over 1 million homes across the UK with its high speed 100Mb Internet service.
This is a landmark for Virgin Media's roll-out plan, which it says is on track for completion in mid 2012. The service is currently the UK's fastest available broadband service with its principal rival British Telecom (BT) offering a maximum bandwidth of 40Mb, 10Mb slower than Virgin Media's second best package.
Jon James, executive director at Virgin Broadband said, "When we finish the roll-out of 100Mb across our network, half the country will have access to ultrafast broadband. That'll be six years ahead of EU targets." So Virgin Media has hit the 1 million homes mark in the UK and plans to reach over 30 million additional subscribers over the next year and a bit.
The so-called 'superfast' 100Mb service will set you back £35 per month when you sign up for a Virgin phone line at an additional £12.99 per month on a 12 month contract. Oh, and don't forget the £30 activation fee. If you want to use an existing BT phone line then you'll just pay a monthly fee of £45 for the service. If you want high speed Internet but your wallet won't stretch to cover such pricey service then Virgin Media also offers a 50Mb service for as little as £12.50 a month. Plus the added monthly phone line charge and activation fee, of course. µ

I 2nd that the 50mb is great package and i have never had any issues with it, I also second that i also get 50/60 MB sometimes even 70 every so often with a upload of 5/6mb.
I cannot see the point in having the 100mb and paying the extra money, Honestly, Don't get my wrong 100mb would be a great package but i cannot see a major difference between the 50mb package and the 100mb package, My friend has the 100mb package and he doesn't actually get the full 100mb and i cannot see a major difference with the 50mb and the 100mb.
I'm going to be sticking with the 50mb package until virgin brings out something like 400mb / 1GB, Since there is no major difference between the 50mb and 100mb, Brilliant packages though and never had any issues, The download and upload speed is spot on for me.
The 20Mbit service does have a download cap, but the 50 and 100 tiers do not. For that reason alone it's worth the upgrade.
I have their 50mb/5mb package and I've been very impressed with it. I actually get 60mb/6mb which is way above the promised speed.
During peak hours I reduce the speed a little as the internet is not just for me alone.
As JD commented I didn't use their Router as it lacked functionality. Probably OK for the average user.
Im on Virgin 20Mbit and I only get that speed for a short time on off-peaks
God help you if you happen to download more then 2GB .. or its speed nerf for 6 hours.
Of course if you live somewhere where there are about 3 people on the line, then sure .. you get what you paid for
...you'll be forced to take their new "Superhub as a modem/router" ie, their clone of a BT Homehub, Unfortunately the Superhub is a buggy mess with a fraction of the functionality you thought became standard five years ago.
VM are scrabbling around desperately trying to fix it, but you only have to look in their forums to see all the problems they are causing
It's been enough to keep men and others far away from upgrading to higher then the 20 mbit service.
