IT ACCESSORY SUPPLIER Eminent is working on a high-definition media player that will employ Google's Android operating system.
The device, dubbed EM7297 HDMedia AND, will act like a traditional media player, allowing users to play movies in HD and listen to music, but the addition of Android will add a slew of extra features.
Apps will be a particular focus, with users able to select from the thousands of apps available at the Android Market. It is not currently clear if all of these will work on the device, nor if Eminent intends to offer updates to the latest versions of Android, but it still represents a big step for the media player industry, with many more likely to follow.
Eminent is boasting that the user interface for its media player will be significantly better than the competition thanks to Android. It will also feature a built-in web browser.
The device will also include USB 3.0, Gigabit LAN, Flash 10 and OpenGL support.
The company is in the final stages of its hardware and software development for its Android media player. It says it plans to launch the device in Europe in the very near future. µ

Why buy a RISC based system in this form factor when an x86 based system is becoming available with AMD Fusion? The problem with this unit is storage. It's all peripheral when it needs to be built-in to keep it all neat and tidy.
