ETHERNET CONNECTIONS could get a whole lot faster with the Ethernet Alliance focusing on plans for the rollout of 100Gb Ethernet.
The Ethernet Alliance successfully demonstrated the latest form of Ethernet recently, which is capable of speeds reaching 10Gbps, 40Gbps and even 100Gbps, an industry first.
It also helped produced the IEEE standard for 40Gb and 100Gb Ethernet, which is known as IEEE Standard 802.3ba-2010. Interconnect specifications for 100Gb Ethernet are planned for discussion at the Technology Exploration Forum that will be held in California in June.
Now the Ethernet Alliance intends to push the technology even further with multi-vendor interoperability. The Higher Speed Modular Interconnect subcommittee will be aiding in this effort.
100Gb Ethernet is expected to be a requirement for next generation networking, according to the Ethernet Alliance and the Next Generation Enterprise Cabling group, which is researching what infrastructure will be needed for future data centres.
It wasn't so long ago that Ethernet speeds of 1Gbps were all the rage, but with the possibility of multiplying that speed by 100 on the near horizon, things are about to get a lot faster.
The Ethernet Alliance will meet again at the IEEE 902 Plenary event in Singapore this week. µ

Considering we don't spend money on Fiber optic in our company as its "too expensive" hopefully it will also come in with a cost advantage over Fiber.
InfiniBand is not ethernet and is meant for "connection between processor nodes and high performance I/O nodes such as storage devices."
And the IEEE is not a commercial thing so it's not 'marketing'
"The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers or IEEE (read I-Triple-E) is a non-profit professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation related to electricity. It has more than 400,000 members in more than 160 countries, 45% outside the United States"
And you are a bit of a prat.
What a BAD, BAD article!
He says "an industry first". Never learned about Infiniband? Thats available since years and even faster.
And no mentioning about latency!!!!
Just marketing bullshit repeating of a liitle child.
