FINNISH PHONE MAKER Nokia is asking its users, or ex-users, what they would expect to see for the Holy Grail of struggling mobile phone firms, the phone that will appeal to the next billion users.
Although many might assume that the tie-up with Microsoft would pave the way for many exciting smartphones and high tech communicators, the Finnish firm seems to be more excited about releasing basic phones for developing markets. That's something that ten years ago it excelled at doing.
Earlier this week Nokia announced a music phone with a sub-woofer that should appeal to people with shallow pockets and train-journey ruining tendencies, and now it is asking what features users would most appreciate in low-cost, simple handsets.
No need to check your calendars people, because despite the fact that it is 2011 already Nokia is suggesting features such as WiFi, email and a torch.
"We've gathered some features that we'd like you to put together to make the ultimate basic phone, perfect for somebody where even a €35 phone could mean a month's salary," wrote someone called Adam on Nokia's blog.
"Remember, this isn't about sticking in loads of features, it's about deciding what's important to people while trying to help them in their everyday lives."
There is a caveat however, which is that the poll is just theoretical and presumably not to be taken seriously.
If only the probably ill-advised Nokia Microsoft deal, or suicide pact as The INQUIRER tends to think it will be, had such a disclaimer. µ
... for the Poll, I mean.
Only those with a salary < €35/month should be allowed to take part in the poll.
Internet connection, the current 2nd place vote, should for example probably be less important than robust, dust and water proof.
A phone that's based on a decent OS... meaning NOT microsoft. Sorry Nokia, but choosing Windows Phone over Android is the final nail in your coffin. Good bye.
Seems every new model that comes out has a worse screen and keyboard with less keys.
Nokia is just falling too far behind the hardware curve, as well as the disaster that is Symbian. After 5 Nokia phones, my next will be an Android.
@wird
they already do that in Bavaria with their Iphones & Blackberries.
Beer opener in mobile phone would be a hit.
Just update the 6310i core features, remove some of the corporate angled junk and repackage it with a daylight viewable screen, quality antenna, good plain keypad, tough casing and proper battery.
Job done.
No need for internet, colourful UI, MP3 and all that crap.
Goat herders dont have a lot of use for that. Nor do I.
Disclaimer: Nokia employee.
"No need to check your calendars people, because despite the fact that it is 2011 already Nokia is suggesting features such as WiFi, email and a torch."
This statement is brainless in the context of a sub-35e device targeted at the world's poorest.
Cheap shot and unworthy of Inq.
A flippin' GPS that works so you can actually use the free turn by turn software they supply?
Oh what do I care, I don't use my N97 anymore, I've got a lovely droid now :-D
