Flash Player 10.2 hits Motorola Xoom ahead of UK launch

The killer app the Ipad will never have
Fri Mar 11 2011, 12:20

US SMARTPHONE MAKER Motorola's Xoom tablet will have the latest version of Flash Player by the time it reaches UK shores.

In a Twitter tweet, Motorola revealed that an update to the Android tablet is going out over the air that has various enhancements as well as Adobe's Flash Player 10.2.

Motorola's bid to grab a piece of the burgeoning tablet pie was first seen at the beginning of the year running Android 3.0 Honeycomb, which is specifically optimised for tablets. Costing around £500, it should offer some much-needed competition to the Ipad 2.

The Xoom's ability to run Flash well is important. The Ipad currently dominates the tablet market, but it will never be able to run the Flash video and rich media used by a lot of websites. Competitors like Samsung and RIM are making a big deal about their tablets having this capability, and Motorola probably will too.

Apart from that, the Xoom tablet has some nice looking hardware, including a 10.1-inch HD screen, a dual core processor, a front-facing 2MP camera and a rear 5MP camera for taking better photos.

Tablet PCs are often very pretty and all, but for many INQUIRER readers it is very difficult to justify buying them for the premium prices technology firms are asking for them.

But last year, Apple's Ipad flicked a switch in many people's brains that it was worthwhile to spend a small fortune on a shiny toy. Whether the Ipad's Android rivals can do the same, we will just have to wait and see. µ

Flash

I'm quite a bit disappointed with the performance of FLASH speed on XOOM, dual core Nvidia cpu. Engaget mentioning its framelag on hd video playback and what not. Also its mobile gestures are non existent (no pitch, zoom), just for AIR.Certainly there's a lot of space for the product to evolve.

On another hand, to people dismissing flash - an average stupid joe. Know nothing of web, web development, richness and opportunities that only flash can offer with blazing development times and unrivaled richness/experience. Of course to people with adblockers, whining what a crap tehnology it is, well it just goes to show your day to day routine of checking mail and spamming news sites, both full of ads. Then again im surprised if your PC is slow and needs flash turned off for browsing. Personally, with both PC and mobile device, I sure as hell enjoy - full Youtube experience, vimeo, watch news/live footage, educational video material that is protected from ripping(including screen capture), multiple applications that run same on PC and mobile device helping to keep information stored online and much, much more.

The Flash Tax

Well it only taxes your hardware, not your pocket.

The sad truth

"Competitors like Samsung and RIM are making a big deal about their tablets having this capability, and Motorola probably will too."

This can only mean one of two things:
1) Their marketeers think it's what people care about most.
2) It's all they could come up with that their thing does better than Apple's new thing.

And seeing how the first iPad was a huge success, I don't think it's the first.

Flash on phone

"Flash running on a mobile phone with limited ram and processor speed , must be a truly emotional experience"

Not been my experience - pretty much only watch Youtube on my phone now.

Asavin, Ever heard of checking your facts?

Although I can understand the, I think I am cool because I hate Apple attitude to some extent, I really struggle to understand the lack of this basic journalistic skill called "Checking the facts".

If you are so desperate to watch some flash ads on an iOS tablet you can either use iSwifter or Skyfire.
Both will allow your seemingly insatiable appetite for Ads and Porn to be satisfied without draining the battery or crashing the device as flash does.

Asavin is just a Fanboi hater

I agree, with the previous comment.
I too have a flashblocker on my PC.
Is the web so much more a rich experience cos you can see lovely adverts on every page. I must be missing something.

Personally

I have an add-on on all my broswers that block flash, which speed up my browsing experience for a start!
