Google rolls out personalised search results

Adding ability to block websites
Fri Mar 11 2011, 09:32

INTERNET AND SOFTWARE GIANT Google is rolling out a feature in its search engine that allows users to customise search results.

Sometimes when searching we get links that we'd rather not see again the next time we search for similar topics. Google has paid heed to this and developed a way to block these websites from future results.

Beneath each search result there will now be a block link button to prevent any website from reappearing in your searches. You will have to approve a confirmation message and you can immediately undo the block if you blocked a website erroneously.

In future searches that would normally have resulted in blocked links appearing, users will be notified at the top or bottom of the page that some results have been blocked.

There's also a way to manage blocked pages by going into Search Settings or clicking "Manage blocked sites". This will allow users to block, unblock, or simply view a list of previously blocked websites.

Google said it won't currently use information about blocked websites in its page rankings, but that this is a possibility for the future. The problem with this is that people might block their rival's website in order to push it further down in Google's search rankings. µ
