Apple will launch the Ipad 2 today

Thinner and lighter, not much better
Fri Mar 11 2011, 09:14

SELLER OF SHINY TOYS Apple will launch the second model of its successful tablet computer, the Ipad 2 today.

The Ipad 2 will be available in all 236 Apple stores in the US from 5:00pm today. It will also be available at the Apple web store.

Apple is offering a free personal setup service for Ipad 2 customers in its retail stores, which will help with customisation of email, apps, and other things consumers want to do with their new drinks tray that can surf the Internet.

The Ipad 2 boasts some improvements over the original, such as being 33 per cent thinner and 15 per cent lighter. It has a dual core A5 processor, which is a step in the right direction to compete with dual core Android alternatives. It also features a second camera and Facetime, two long-expected features.

Everything else is pretty much the same, however, and consumers will need to think long and hard about whether or not this is a sufficient enough upgrade for the price.

It carries a suggested retail price of $499 for the 16GB model, $599 for the 32GB version, and $699 for the 64GB flavour, the same pricing as the original Ipad. The 3G option will be a little bit more expensive, with a price tag ranging from $629 to $829, ensuring that fanbois will be out of pocket until the Ipad 3 arrives. µ

We're not anti- Apple

We're not anti Apple... we're anti- "bad deals" and when you're talking about overpriced gear... then you're talking about bad deals... I'm with that other dude, although he was talking Euros, but if I could buy it for $299 USD, then it'd would be priced accordingly... for $500+ you can buy an actual portable computer... I've got an HTC Evo 4G, just about the most advanced mobile you can get, and even though sometimes I'm amazed at what I can do with my phone, it still was only $199 with a contract... these things are PDA's with big screens. If the most expensive iPad was $500, the middle was $400 and the cheap was $300... I'd say, OK these are slightly expensive, but somewhat reasonable prices... but with the limitations of these devices in their current states, I'm not spending more than $500 on one, when it's most likely going to sit in my den for me to web surf and maybe play a few games on...

Uninformed

Gfx is 9 times faster! How is this not an improvement? And what is iPad competing with? The competition is years behind.

@steve: So far, Android tablets are more expensive and are inferior, especially for gfx.

Ok

The title of this article got it right. Maker of shiny toys. Because that's what the iPad is. Don't get me wrong, I love Apple's design, but I just can't justify the cost of the iPad. At €150/200 less then I'd buy.

What a waste of money

Well they say a fool and his money are soon parted, what a total waste of money.

Not Bad really

Other than the screen I actually think this is a relatively good product, especially considering the competition has not done its job and vastly undercut Apple whilst retaining the features as normally happens. Having played with the original iPad but not bought one it addresses my main concerns with it being the weight and the paltry amount of RAM (which causes problems ion my iphone).
