Youview faces continental competiton for Freesat boxes

HBB TV could appear first

UK INTERNET TV SERVICE Youview could face stiff competition from a continental competitor called Hybrid Broadcast Broadband (HBB) TV that is expected to be used for future Freesat set-top boxes (STBs).

Youview and HBB TV are designed to combine TV channels delivered via broadcast with broadband services, such as video on demand, and access to other Internet only telly related services. HBB TV involves French and German broadcasters and a wide array of technical partners.

The BBC backed Youview is supported by all the terrestrial UK broadcasters - BT, Talktalk and Arqiva - but it has been mired in delays and is yet to publish its core technical specifications. HBB TV produced its first official specification in June 2010. According to Broadcast TV, HBB TV will be used for new Freesat STBs.

Yet Freesat is part owned by the BBC and ITV. Through an STB connected to a satellite dish, it offers 150 plus digital TV and radio services, including free High Definition channels, while also providing personal video recorder features.

Freesat did not deny that it might use HBB TV and told The INQUIRER, "We remain fully supportive of YouView. Irrespective of those plans [for a Freeview box] Freesat...will continue to evolve and work with a range of existing and new technologies."

Youview has been delayed to 2012, so the HBB TV boxes will likely be launched at Christmas time, giving it a big advantage for market penetration. Sky and Virgin Media have both challenged Youview calling it anti-competitive, so The INQUIRER wonders how the firms will react to a new Youview-like competitor. µ

Why was the response to talented hackers comment deleted?

Someone posted a rebuttal to the above statement, where the hell did it go?

I'll repeat what they said, and hope it was just a different site, which would indicate asis is a troll, since the post is pretty much identical. Either way, there is some evil stuff going on.

Anyway, look up the word hacker, it has nothing to do with crime, the criminals are a sub-class of hackers. Hacking doesn't mean criminal, just like a locksmith shouldn't automatically be assumed to be a car thief or a cat burglar. A hacker is simply a person who's found a little known shortcut to doing something, and in many cases, many shortcuts. If I find an easier way to fix a flat tire, I've hacked that particular task.

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!!!

"...we're always interested to hear from talented hackers."
