Microsoft will launch IE9 on 14 March

Proper browser release slated for SXSW
Wed Mar 09 2011, 16:45

SOFTWARE HOUSE Microsoft will release its Internet Explorer 9 web browser on 14 March.

In the same week that Microsoft lined up a bullet and aimed it at IE6, Ryan Gavin, senior director for Internet Explorer 9, said that the firm will continue its tradition of bringing the browser to the SXSW ball, and on the 14 March, at a party no less, will launch the final release.

"Exactly twelve months from the first Platform Preview of IE9, on Monday March 14th we will celebrate the developers and designers who are making a more beautiful web for all of us," he wrote.

"In Austin we will be joined by some of the most exciting websites and web heroes out there, including Ze Frank. We also have a heck of party planned celebrating the amazing developers and designers who are creating a more beautiful web. We'll feature live music from Yeasayer, the Head and the Heart, and Fences at Austin City Limits Live the night of the 14th. It's a party you won't want to miss."

The INQUIRER has to wash its hair that night, but those people that do attend might find a few surprises, Gavin added, and we suspect either some sort of buffet or canapes will also be on the menu.

IE9 has already been downloaded 36 million times, said Microsoft earlier this month, and the final version - at least until the first patches appear - is only likely to increase its use further.

However, how much impact it will have on Microsoft's overall web browser market share remains to be seen as its browser software is gradually falling out of favour among users. µ

What's IE6 got to do with it?

@Ocularsinister:
That's my thought too.

If IE9 is to somehow reduce the use of IE6, it must be able to:
1) Run on Windows XP, and
2) Have a guaranteed 100% compatibility with software written for use with IE6.

IE9 RC solid & fast.

Used the beta and up to RC with no probs on Win 7 SP 1 Ultimate 32x.
Fast and clean. Will certainly do final release since upgrades were easy.

Continue to use.

IE9 has been downloaded 36 million times. The question that matters is how many continue to use it. IE is on my machine as a backup. If they just would have innovated instead of sitting on their hands. They would still be where they were years ago if someone at MS had a vision for the future. Microsoft is not the innovator, they play catchup more then create anything new. I was a big fan years ago, I still have a tshirt from MS that was shipped to me that says "I downloaded Midnight August13,1996" I think that was for IE4, never worn. Good quality too, tag says Material made in USA and sewn in Jamaica.:)

Already running?

Pretty sure I've had ie9 rolled out onto my machine for about a week now. Was running the ie9 beta for the past 3 months, then it updated as part of a standard MS patch rollout. I looked last night and it said v9.xxxxxxxxxx (can't remember and now at work on ie6)

Worst browser I have used

IE8 is better and thats not that good, IE9 web pages constantly crash on sites what worked 30 mins earlier without a problem and adobe flash threw error after error. I have never used such a bad browser before and when I removed it from my PC everything worked as normal.

Advoid it.

Party

Well this time I guess they really don't have enough motivation to once again throw that big "e" on their rival's door.
